The Multidisciplinary Faculty Discussion Group on Environmental Issues is hosting a series of brown bag lunch events which aim to showcase UPEI faculty's environment-related research. 

The third speaker in the series is Dr. Pamela Courtenay-Hall, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Philosophy, speaking on Ecological Identity and Ecological Grief in a Climate-Changing World, Wednesday, March 18, 12:30-1:15 p.m. in SDU Main Building, Room 115. Students, faculty, and staff are all welcome to attend.

First-year and fourth-year students in Arts, Business, Engineering, Nursing, and Science have been invited to fill out the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) to help UPEI improve student experiences. Students who complete the survey have chances to win one of the 9 early bird prizes and a grand prize. The first draw of 3 early bird prizes will take place on Friday, Mach 13. Abstract: Accessing quality data is one of the main challenges in data science. Query composition is an important and difficult task for accessing data in database system. This talk will present techniques based on queries performance prediction, data provenance, and data quality assessment for facilitating effective query composition.

Please join Riley Jackson for his Molecular and Macromolecular Sciences Seminar Series presentation on " A Survey of Generative Machine Learning for Molecular Design and Discovery".

Abstract: In less than half a decade generative machine learning has rapidly become a critical tool for artificial creativity, leading to the construction of autonomous systems which generate artificial speech and images with eerily high fidelity. These successes have inspired computational chemists to apply these innovative algorithms to the difficult task of molecular discovery and design. Discovering a novel drug and taking it to market costs over $1 billion, and often takes well over 13 years. Because this process is so costly, reducing false leads is paramount. There is hope that generative machine learning can be used to generate high potential leads with low computational cost, decreasing the chance of false leads. In this seminar a handful of cutting-edge algorithms for molecular generation will be studied along with how molecules are typically represented to autonomous systems.
