Do you want to learn how to stay positive and confident as a parent and reduce stress in your
family? Free Triple P-Positive Parenting Seminars will be held February 18th, 25th and March
3rd at Murphy’s Community Centre (room 207) from 7:00-8:30pm. Triple P is an international
project promoted and supported by the Government of Prince Edward Island. There are three
sessions in the seminar series, and each session addresses a different theme. Fathers,
mothers, grandparents, foster parents and guardians are welcome!

Mitacs Training and Synapse are co-hosting a free "Practice Your Presentation Skills I" workshop for UPEI graduates and postdoctoral fellows in Room 142 of Andrew Hall on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm 

There are still a limited number of spots open for registration in the course. 

Course registration is on first-come, first-served basis and can be made on EDGE. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided to all participants.

Practice Your Presentation Skills I – Charlottetown, PE (February 25, 2020)

In this one-day course, theory is introduced in short bursts and participants spend the majority of time practicing their presentation skills while receiving onsite feedback. The focus on extensive practice and feedback is what makes the program meaningful, and is what makes the learning stick.

Learning Outcomes:

Through completing this course, participants will: 

• Broaden their understanding of presentation logistics
• Gain a greater ability to persuade and motivate others
• Understand how to plan and structure presentations
• Understand how (and how not to) use visual aids
• Learn to engage others through genuine and authentic presentation
• Learn tools to overcome and manage fears of public speaking
• Gain onsite practice and receive expert and peer feedback
• Be perceived as an expert in their topic area

You are cordially invited to attend Janet Payne’s teaching presentation on February 25th at noon in AVC 287N.  Janet will be presenting “Creating a Welcoming Classroom” based in part on Teaching at Its Best: A Research-Based Resource for College Instructors by Linda Nilson.

This presentation will focus on ways of creating a warm, welcoming  environment that fosters student participation, motivation to learn, satisfaction with the course, and achievement of course objectives.  Much of the practical information suggested by Nilson revolves around planning a welcoming classroom, creating positive first day of class, developing rapport with and between students, learning students' names, and creating an inclusive and equitable classroom.

Dr. Karen Overall, a board-certified specialist in veterinary behavioural medicine, will give a public workshop on Tuesday, February 25, about the issue of behavourial problems in cats and dogs. Her presentation, titled “Help! I think my dog/cat needs a shrink! How the modern science of veterinary behavioural medicine saves lives, families, and sanity,” will take place at 7 p.m. in Lecture Theatre A, Atlantic Veterinary College, UPEI. 

Like people, animals are affected by mental illness, including anxiety and depression. Behavioral problems and complaints are the most common reasons why people abandon, relinquish, or euthanize companion animals. Dr. Overall will talk about some of the common problems that afflict cats and dogs, driving their owners crazy in the process. She will discuss how pet owners can understand and treat their animals’ needs so they can all live together happily.

The UPEI Diversity and Social Justice Studies program, the Dean of Arts, and the Dean of Education will host a launch of Dr. Darryl Leroux’s book, Distorted Descent: White Claims to Indigenous Identity, on Tuesday, March 10, at 4 pm in Lecture Theatre A, Atlantic Veterinary College, UPEI. Leroux, an associate professor at Saint Mary’s University, will give a lecture at this free public event.

In the book, Leroux explores a social phenomenon called race shifting, which has taken off in the twenty-first century. In race shifting, otherwise white, French-descendant settlers in Canada discover an Indigenous ancestor born 300 to 375 years ago through genealogy and use that ancestor as the sole basis for an eventual shift into an “Indigenous” identity today.

Students, faculty, and staff at UPEI are invited to participate in a research project titled Evaluating UPEI Student and Faculty/Staff Interest in WOOFS (Wellness-Oriented Outreach for Students & Staff). Honours student Amy MacQuarrie, under the supervision of Dr. Tracy Doucette in the Psychology Department here at UPEI, is conducting a campus-wide survey on this topic.

The purpose of this research project is to examine UPEI student and faculty/staff interest in a proposed comfort dog program on campus (WOOFS). In addition, it will also explore
connections between pet attitudes and comfort/therapy dog programs. Students enrolled in PSY 1020 will receive a 1% bonus credit in PSY 1020 for participating. Students and faculty/staff not enrolled in PSY 1020 will be entered into a draw for the chance to win a $50 gift card! Students enrolled in PSY 1020 who do not wish to complete the survey may complete an alternative writing assignment for extra credit.
