Name that Building! UPEI wants your help in choosing a name for our new building.
The University of Prince Edward Island is excited to be approaching completion of the new 140,000 square-foot building, which supports the UPEI Faculty of Medicine and medical learners in the regional campus of Memorial University’s Faculty of Medicine, as well as UPEI students in nursing, psychology, nutrition and dietetics, kinesiology, paramedicine, and other programs. It will also have a Patient Medical Home, the provincial Adult ADHD Clinic (both operated by Health PEI), and allow for collaborations with others at UPEI—like the Atlantic Veterinary College—and in the broader community.
The Vice-President Academic and Research and Vice-President Administration and Finance would like to engage the creativity of the University community to consider some of the latest proposed names and offer feedback in support or against those submitted—or suggest potentially a new name altogether.
Help us choose the name! The finalist options include the
- Health Education Facility
- Interprofessional Health Education Facility
- Faculty of Medicine and Health Education Centre
- Medical and Interprofessional Health Centre.
What is your opinion? Email your thoughts about one or more of the above—or an even better name—to vpaf@upei.ca. A steering committee will review this feedback as part of its selection process. Please send all feedback by 11:59 pm on September 29, 2025.

UPEI ITSS, in partnership with the Robertson Library, has launched an exciting new extension of its IT Help Desk services. A new Help Desk dedicated specifically to assisting our UPEI students has opened in the Library Learning Commons, Room 275, operating Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
This new student-focused desk complements the existing ITSS Help Desk in AVC 246S, which will now be dedicated exclusively to supporting UPEI Faculty and Staff.
Basic IT support will continue to be available at the main Library Service Desk from 8:00 am until 8:00 pm, but the new ITSS Help Desk in the Library will serve as a convenient referral point for cases requiring more advanced ITSS assistance.
Students seeking ITSS support can visit the Library in person or submit a request through the online Help Request form. The help desk number remains (902) 566-0465 and will soon be outfitted with a tree selection to provide both service to students and critical live support for employees.
Visit the ITSS Help Desk page for more information.
At times, teaching can feel isolating. With so many demands on our time and desiring to do the best for students, we can set high expectations for ourselves. And – we are expected to be life-long learners, by adapting our teaching approaches during the pandemic and now again in the wave of AI.
In this workshop, participants will receive a teaching resource that was developed by the 2024 3M National Teaching Fellows to create a sense of community and rediscover the joy of learning. Some instructors may like to use this resource as a daily planner or notebook, while others may use it to journal about their teaching practices.
Through the workshop, participants will explore how they use time and space, what some barriers to joy might be, engage in conversation to build community, and utilize a resource so that we can collectively rediscover the joy of learning. For more details regarding the learning objectives of the workshop and bios for the two wonderful 3M National Teaching Fellows from the 2024 cohort, please check out the campus events calendar.
There are two workshop options to choose from:
Monday Sept 22 at 9:00 am in the Teaching and Learning Centre - Robertson Library Annex - Room 230
Monday Sept 22 at 11:45am in the Teaching and Learning Centre - Robertson Library Annex - Room 230
Please let us know which workshop session you plan to attend. We have space for 20 participants in each session – RSVP. Come a few minutes early to enjoy refreshments, conversation with colleagues and to celebrate two 3M National Teaching Fellows.
We're excited to share that the Robertson Library will offer tours between September 22 and October 10! This is a great opportunity to explore our spaces and learn more about what we have to offer.

The first meeting of the UPEI Senate will take place on Friday, September 26, 2025, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm in Room 102 at Alumni Hall (618 University Avenue). To view the 2025-2026 calendar of Senate meetings or documents for the upcoming meeting, click here. (Posted one week before the meeting)
All meetings are open to members of the University community, although certain in-camera items (e.g., granting of degrees) may require the Senate to go into a closed session. Only members of Senate are permitted to address the Senate unless otherwise recognized by the chair.
For logistical purposes, members of the UPEI community who wish to attend the open session of a UPEI Senate meeting are asked to contact senate@upei.ca one week prior to the meeting. While Senate is an in-person meeting, members of the University community may request a virtual connection when they are unable to attend in person.

Thesis defense presented by Saad Cheema
Title of the Thesis: "Supplemental Irrigation through Decision Support System in the Face of Climate Change: A sustainable Approach"
Precise supplemental irrigation has become essential because of climate-driven variability. This thesis proposes a decision support system (DSS) that integrates soil, crops, and climate data for real-time scheduling. Soil Water Characteristic Curves (SWCC) were developed for PEI soils for determining field capacity, wilting point, and available water. Stage-specific potato crop coefficients (Kc) were measured utilizing a lysimeter. The seasonal and daily crop water requirements (ETc) were around 280 mm under PEI growing conditions. On-farm reference evapotranspiration (ETo) measurements enhanced precision relative to regional meteorological stations. A soil-water balance model combined all inputs to trigger irrigation in real time. The research was converted into a real-time DSS web application for end users. This methodology provides a sustainable, climate-resilient foundation for precise water management.
