Ethics protocols that involve ‘more than minimal risk’ must be reviewed by the full UPEI Research Ethics Board (REB).  

The next deadline for submitting these protocols is Friday September 27 2019. They will be reviewed at the October meeting.  Protocols involving ‘more than minimal risk’ that are received after September 27 will be reviewed at the November 2019 meeting.

Other ethics protocol submissions, including new applications that do not involve ‘more than minimal risk’, renewals, and amendments may be submitted at any time. They will be sent for delegated review as soon as all necessary forms are received.

Please ensure that you download and use the current forms from http://www.upei.ca/research/forms. Use Adobe Reader to complete forms.

Submit the following:

  • one hard copy of the signed application form and associated documents to Joy Knight at the Office of Academic and Research, 200 Kelley Memorial Building and  
  • one e-copy of all documents to reb@upei.ca

Today is the very first World Patient Safety Day. The World Health Organization (WHO) wants to promote patient safety every day but has declared September 17th as Word Patient Safety Day.  No one should be harmed in health care and yet, every day, thousands of patients suffer avoidable harm while receiving care. If you or a loved one are a patient, be actively involved in your own care. Provide accurate information about your medical history and be sure to communicate openly with your health care team. Ask questions to be aware about your health condition and treatment. Speak up for the safety of your care! Speak up for patient safety!

The deadline for Animal Care Protocol Submissions (new, renewal, or amendment) is Friday, October 4th for the October meeting. 

Ensure you download the current forms from http://upei.ca/research-services/research-certifications/animal-care, use the most current Adobe Reader to complete forms (only current forms will be accepted).  To view any UPEI ACC SOPs and Codes of Practice, they can be accessed through myUPEI at https://portal.upei.ca/facultystaff/administrativeservices/AVCAnimalCare/Pages/default.aspx.  

Both the signed hard copy and electronic protocol submission must be submitted by the deadline date.

  • Submit one copy of original protocol with signature to AVC - North Annex, Biomedical Sciences Dept., Rm 2302
  • Submit an electronic copy to animalcare@upei.ca

Those protocols received after the deadline will be reviewed the following month.  The Committee requires at least one month for processing applications.

Students from UPEI’s Kinesiology 3430 class are seeking participants to take part in a five-week exercise training program. Students will create personalized exercise training programs for each participant, based on their fitness, skill level, and personal interests.

Participants must be between 30 and 65 years of age. The program will take place Tuesday and Thursday afternoons in the Kinesiology Teaching Lab (Steel 128), beginning the week of October 7. Participants will receive a fitness test the first and last week of the program, separated by three weeks of supervised aerobic and strength training.  For information or to sign up, please contact Tyler Baker - tpbaker@upei.ca.

The Healthy Campus Committee is providing a 45 minute class that offers meditation and gentle yoga stretches. The meditation segment of the class creates more calm, inner peace and balance that benefits both your emotional wellbeing and overall health.This is a class for all fitness levels. The class will be held on Thursdays at 12:30 pm - 1:15pm.   Yoga Instructor: Pam Harris. The classes will be held in 4 week blocks.   First Rotation: September 19 - October 10.  Second Rotation: October 17 - November 7. Third Rotation November 14 - December 5. Its free but pre-registration required and individuals will be put on wait lists. Please contact Angela Marchbank, Fitness and Wellness Coordinator at amarchbank@upei.ca to reserve your spot.

The Indigenizing and Decolonizing reading group is starting up again! Co-organized by the FDO and the IEAC faculty development committee, this reading group is open to anyone on campus, for any or all of the sessions. Our first gathering this academic year will be on Wednesday, Oct 2, at 12:30 pm, in the SDU Main Building Faculty Lounge. We'll be taking a cue from Pam Palmater's reconciliation book club and reading her first suggestion there: Whose Land is it Anyway? -- available online at https://fpse.ca/sites/default/files/news_files/Decolonization%20Handbook.pdf. Read the book, grab a colleague, and come join others in the ongoing discussion about indigenizing and decolonizing the university.

Members of the campus community are invited to join Dr. Linyuan Guo-Brennan and Dr. Charlene VanLeeuwen for a research presentation community-based learning and international students.  The presentation will be approximately 45 minutes followed by a 10 minute question period.  

Increased global mobility has allowed more and more students to pursue graduate education overseas, and many are engaged in community-based learning (CBL) through formal or informal educational opportunities.

Based on a mixed-methods case study conducted in the context of UPEI's M.Ed with Global Perspectives Program, the presentation shares the impact of CBL on international students’ academic, sociocultural, personal, and professional development and discusses the benefits and challenges unique to international students in community-based learning.
