Want to join a nationally recognized and extremely rewarding committee at UPEI? WUSC stands for the World University Services of Canada, a non-profit organization working in over 70 campuses across Canada.
While WUSC offers a variety of programs, UPEI's WUSC committee has focused largely on the Student Refugee Program (SRP). The SRP program involves supporting a student from a refugee camp as they settle in Canada for their post-secondary education. The students are no longer considered refugees in Canada as they receive permanent residency upon arrival. This is unlike any other program in the world. The WUSC SRP committee supports the student's transition to Canada and to UPEI--financially, socially, academically, etc. We also promote education on campus about refugee issues. It's a great organization and group to be a part of.
We are currently seeking staff members or faculty to sit on our executive committee. If interested, please contact nmourad@upei.ca or rgreathouse@upei.ca. The committee will also host an information session this month,

Before you go on vacation, make sure you set up your out-of-office message. This gives you a chance to disconnect and recharge away from e-mail and social media. Write a clear out-of-office that explains when you will be gone and when you will respond. It is a good idea to ask a colleague if people can contact them during your absence, and you can do the same for them. Enjoy your vacation!
In recognition of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, Michele Audette will share her First Nations experience and deliver her reflections on communities, cultural and biological mixing, language, culture, identity, and self-vision.

Title: Exploring coastal birds in relation to off-bottom oyster aquaculture sites in two productive areas on Prince Edward Island
Abstract: The coastal bays of Prince Edward Island (PEI) support a robust bird population and booming aquaculture industry. Off-bottom oyster aquaculture has been gaining popularity, though relatively little is known about its impact on vulnerable bird species. This project aims to address knowledge gaps in this area, with an emphasis on shorebird foraging behaviour. Monitoring sites with and without aquaculture in two Important bird areas, Malpeque Bay and Orwell Bay, displayed increased bird abundance and diversity within aquaculture sites. Changes in behaviour between aquaculture and non-culture areas highlighted the use of oyster gear as an important resting site for coastal birds. Additionally, there was a correlation between an increase in sediment invertebrates in aquaculture sites and the increase in bird abundance. These results suggest that coastal birds and current levels of off-bottom oyster culture can successfully co-utilize PEI’s nutrient-rich estuaries.
Accessibility Services will be closed for the day (8 am to 4 pm) on Wednesday, August 3, and will re-open Thursday, August 4, at 8 AM.
