The legal status of islands has increasingly become contested in various parts of the world as a result of the distinction between islands and rocks, and the increasing development of artificial islands. Can international law resolve these issues or just make them more contentious?
Donald Rothwell is a professor of international law at the ANU College of Law, Australian National University, Canberra, Australia. Born on the island continent of Australia, he is a graduate of the University of Alberta, and the University of Calgary, and has lived on Vancouver Island and studied islands and the law of the sea for 30 years.

Environmental Studies and Island Studies welcome the campus community to a research seminar presented by Dr. Nicholas Mercer, Postdoctoral Research Scholar, Dalhousie University. The talk, titled “Decolonized decarbonization: Community-based research for energy sovereignty,” will be held on Wednesday, August 24, at 11:15 am in the Health Sciences Building, Room 103. Dr. Mercer is a candidate for a cross-appointed tenure-track faculty position in Environmental Studies and Island Studies. All are welcome.

As part of the new residence building construction project, we will be required to have two power shutdowns that will affect the Atlantic Veterinary College, Blanchard Hall, Bernardine Hall, Wanda Wyatt Dining Hall, Don and Marion McDougall Hall, Memorial Hall, Cass Science Hall, Duffy Science Centre, Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre, Kelley Memorial Building, Robertson Library, Dalton Hall, K.C. Irving Chemistry Centre, Chaplaincy Centre, Daycare, Wanda Wyatt Dining Hall, and Bill and Denise Andrew Hall. This power shutdown is necessary to bring permanent power to the new building.
This shutdown is scheduled for Wednesday, August 31, 2022, beginning at 5:00 am and is expected to take approximately 2 hours to complete. The second power shutdown is scheduled for 5:00 pm on the same day and is expected to take approximately 2 hours to complete. This second shutdown will not affect the Atlantic Veterinary College and the Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre.
The emergency power generators will be started for each building prior to the beginning of the power interruptions, which means that there will be no delay of power for anything currently on emergency power when the power is disconnected.

The UPEI Health & Wellness Centre will provide COVID-19 Booster Clinics on September 14 and 15 in McMillan Hall, W.A. Murphy Student Centre, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The clinics will provide first dose, second dose, and booster doses of COVID-19 vaccines to students, faculty, and staff, as well as family members who are 18 and older. First come, first served. There is no need to make an appointment, and there is no charge for the vaccine. Vaccines are provided by the Province of Prince Edward Island's Chief Public Health Office (CPHO). Please bring your provincial health card or UPEI ID as we need to provide a record to the CHPO.
The deadline for Fall 2022 Tuition Waivers is Friday, August 19, 2022. We encourage you to have your tuition waiver submitted as soon as possible to assist in the timely processing. Tuition Waiver forms must be submitted electronically.

The Department of Companion Animals will interview Dr. Patrick Burns for a tenure-track faculty position in anesthesiology on Wednesday, August 17, and Thursday, August 18, 2022.
Dr. Burns received his BVSc. in 1992 from the University of Queensland, Australia, and became a member of the Australian & New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care in 1997, and the Australian & New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in Anaesthesia and Critical Care in 2001. He completed a residency in Anesthesia and Critical Care from the University of Pennsylvania in 2005 and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesiologists in 2006. Dr. Burns is currently in a term-contract position in anesthesiology with Companion Animals at the Atlantic Veterinary College.
As part of the interview process, Dr. Burns has been asked to present a 50-minute seminar on two separate topics: the first on a topic that would be appropriate to teach third-year DVM students and the second about his research interests or to demonstrate some of his past research experiences.
