UPEI's Office of Continuing Education and Professional Development and its partner, the Centre d’excellence en français, offer French language courses and training to all classified and casual PEI civil service employees, and employees of Health PEI.

Unsure about your language proficiency level? Take a minute to complete our self-assessment, which will help you register for the appropriate course. Once you have your self-assessed level and the course in which you would like to enrol, visit the Public Service Commission website to register.

UPEI French Level Placement - Self-Assessment 


New French Language Training Program 

Term Dates: 

  • Fall Term: October 2–December 8, 2023 (10 weeks) 
  • Winter Term: January 8–March 15, 2024 (10 weeks) 
  • Spring Term: May 6–June 14, 2024 (6 weeks) 

Courses with Fall Term Start Dates: 

  • Beginner 1A: Online – Asynchronous and Synchronous, 10 weeks 
    • Tuesdays, 11:00–11:45 am
    • Asynchronous content via Moodle – complete 12 modules at your own pace 
    • Weekly 45-minute conversation practice session 
    • Receive an official letter of completion 
      • Proceed to Beginner 1B (Winter), and/or join the Beginner 2/3 (Spring) 
  • Beginner to Intermediate Bridging Cohort: Online – Synchronous, 20 weeks 
    • Wednesdays, 11:00–11:50 am 
    • Dedicated language learners can progress from a Beginner to an Intermediate language level over the Fall and Winter Terms 
    • Complete a short, weekly assignment on your own time 
    • Receive a UPEI Certificate for completion of the Beginner levels 
      • Proceed to Intermediate II/III (Spring) or Intermediate 1A (Fall) 
  • Intermediate 1A: Online – Synchronous, 10 weeks 
    • Wednesdays, 12:00–12:50 pm 
    • Complete a short, weekly writing assignment on your own time 
    • Receive an official letter of completion 
      • Proceed to Intermediate 1B (Winter) and/or Intermediate 2/3 (Spring) 
  • Intermediate 3: Online – Synchronous, 10 weeks 
    • Tuesdays, 12:00–12:50 pm 
    • Complete a weekly writing assignment on your own time 
    • Receive an official letter of completion 
      • Proceed to the Intermediate to Advanced Bridging Cohort (Fall) 
  • Intermediate to Advanced Bridging Cohort: Online – Synchronous, 20 weeks 
    • Thursdays, 12:00–12:50 pm 
    • Dedicated language learners can progress from an Intermediate to an Advanced language level over the Fall and Winter Terms 
    • Approximately 1 hour/week of work to be completed on your own time 
    • Receive a UPEI certificate for completion of the Intermediate levels 
      • Proceed to Advanced Written and Oral Communication (TBA) or join our Advanced level in-person targeted workshops
