The University Senate at UPEI recently appointed a University (Chief) Librarian Search Committee, which had its first meeting on May 24.

UPEI Vice President Academic and Research Dr. Robert Gilmour was confirmed as Committee chair at this meeting. Other committee members are: Nino Antadze (nantadze@upei.ca), Matthew Coleman (mcoleman@upei.ca), Greg Doran (gdoran@upei.ca / 566-6013), Robert Gilmour (rgilmour@upei.ca / 902-566-0637), Rosie Le Faive (rlefaive@upei.ca / 566-0533), Simon Lloyd (slloyd@upei.ca / 566-0536), Chris MacLauchlan (cmaclauchlan@upei.ca / 566-0445), Philip Smith (smithp@upei.ca / 566-0549).

The search committee hopes to finalize a job advertisement and detailed position profile for distribution by mid-June: as part of that process, we wish to receive input from as many interested parties as possible on-campus, in the Island library community, and from the Robertson Library team. Any feedback you share will be held in confidence by the Committee, and can be communicated to any one of the committee members individually, or directly to Dr. Gilmour, as Chair (rgilmour@upei.ca / 902-566-0637). It would be appreciated if responses to this initial call for feedback could be received by Friday, June 8.

As another avenue for feedback, the Committee will also be holding an initial "listening session" for interested individuals to speak to us directly: this will be held in Library Computer Lab 312, from 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM on Friday, June 8.

As noted, this is a fairly open-ended call, but given the committee’s current focus, it would be most helpful if you could highlight items that you believe should appear in a position posting. As a “prompt”, you will find below some links to some recent Canadian postings for “head librarian”-type positions.

You should be aware that this will not be the last opportunity to contribute feedback to the committee. Any site visits by candidates will likely include an open presentation, for example, and the committee will certainly be interested in hearing from you again after that. You can also feel free to communicate informally at any time with any member of the search committee, or with Dr. Gilmour: while we must respect the measure of confidentiality inherent in any job search, we will certainly do our best to keep the lines of communication open as we move forward with this important process.

This summer UPEI will be welcoming over one hundred students from around the world to our beautiful campus. These students will be here to participate in short-term intensive language camps, and enjoy summertime in PEI. Program lengths vary, and students will be here for anywhere from two weeks to six weeks.

Hosts are needed in August for two or three week programs. If you are interested in hosting one of these students or would like to find out more about Homestay Host obligations and remuneration please visit the website or contact Amy Palmer at homestay@upei.ca.

Looking for an enriching volunteer experience this summer? The UPEI English Language Centre is looking for volunteers to join us in assisting with afternoon socio-cultural activities and acting as conversation partners in hosting this year’s English language Camps for International students!

This is a fantastic opportunity to learn and strengthen valuable skills, experience other cultures, and of course have a blast doing it! Activities may include things such as trips to Anne of Green Gables, scavenger hunts, tours, on-campus workshops, beach visits, and more! If you are interested, please email Owen Shaw at oshaw@upei.ca, or call 902-566-0529.

Facilities Management will be operating with limited staffing on June 5 and 6, 2018. This reduction in staff is due to training sessions taking place. Please keep these dates in mind when you are submitting work orders for event set-ups/tear downs, deliveries and regular maintenance requests. This will not affect any priority work orders that are submitted during this time.

Your patience and understanding is appreciated as we continue our necessary training.

It is with great sadness that UPEI announces that Mr. Harry Baglole, the "godfather" of Island Studies, passed away peacefully late Tuesday night in Charlottetown. Harry was the founding Director of the Institute of Island Studies and the visionary behind much of what has taken place in Island Studies at the University of Prince Edward Island since 1985. He served on the IIS executive committee up until his death. Harry also played a central role in many of PEI’s cultural institutions such as Ragweed Press, The Island Magazine, the Macphail Homestead, the Bonshaw Hall, and the Vinland Society.

The University sends condolences to Harry’s family, friends, and colleagues. Flags have been lowered to half-mast in his memory. Visiting hours to be held at Belvedere Funeral Home on Sunday, June 3, 2018 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. A celebration of life filled with stories and music will be held at Spring Park United Church, Charlottetown, on Monday, June 4, 2018 at 7 pm with a reception to follow. Read the obituary

Providing content for a course is pretty easy to do. Figuring out how to explain to students what that content should do to them and for them is far more challenging. There are numerous ways to describe learning and just as many opinions as to which is best. Are learning targets even necessary? Come hear what the E-Learning Office has to say about targets for learning. Thursday, June 7th from 2:00 to 3:00 pm in Room 265, Robertson Library. REGISTER

The Department of Physics invites everyone to come have a (safe) look at the Sun through a solar telescope. We'll look for sunspots, prominences, and whatever other activity is occurring on the Sun that day.

The viewings will take place outside the student entrance of the SSDE building (opposite the MacLauchlan Arena entrance). The first viewing is scheduled for 12-1pm on May 30 and other viewing dates are listed on our website.
