The topic for this week's Graduate Seminar in the Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering is "Networking with Purpose", given by Dr. Amy Hsiao, FSDE Graduate Studies Coordinator based on a National Initiative on Capacity Building and Knowledge Creation in Engineering Leadership (NICKEL) workshop.

While the topic will be focused for FSDE graduate students, all are welcomed to attend. This event is Wednesday, February 13 at 1:00 pm in FSDE room 128A.

All fathers and mothers, grandfathers, and grandmothers, and anyone who cares for children is invited to a series of Triple P Positive Parenting Seminars. There are three sessions, and the first (rescheduled from February 13th due to weather) is on Wednesday, February 20th at 7:00 in the evening, at the Murphy Community Centre on Richmond Street in Charlottetown. The first week’s topic is “The Power of Positive Parenting”. Dr. Philip Smith, Psychology, is the presenter. Sessions are free, and childcare is available. There are numerous ways to describe learning and just as many opinions as to which is best. Are learning targets even necessary? Come and hear what the E-Learning Office has to say about targets for learning. During February, there will be three Triple P Positive Parenting seminars available for all dads and moms of children aged 2-12 who are looking to build better relationships with their children, raise confident children, and reduce stress. Triple P is an international parenting program that gives dads and moms the tools they need to feel confident in their skills as a parent. These seminars are open to anyone who cares for children aged 2-12– whether they be a father, mother, grandfather, grandmother, or any other caregiver. At these 90-minute seminars caregivers can learn strategies to promote good behaviour, help build independence, and help their children strive for success. Seminars will take place at the Murphy’s Community Centre, 200 Richmond Street in Charlottetown. The presenter is Dr. Philip Smith, UPEI Dept. of Psychology. If you use Gmail, Google as a search engine, Chrome or Google Maps, Google has access to a lot of information on your habits, information, hobbies, shopping preferences an so on. You can find out how much info Google has been collecting on you by signing into your google account (accounts.google.com) and then go to myactivity.google.com. This will show you your web activity by date, topic & service. Google is free so of course it comes at a price. You can stop Google tracking activity under Activity Controls and you can also delete by date or delete everything.
Be aware of your data and how its managed, try browsing in incognito mode, log out of your Google account when finished so as not to allow Google access to everything you do online.

Both the signed hard copy and electronic protocol submission must be submitted by the deadline date.

The Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI) is seeking proposals for its next phase of large research projects. The overarching goal of this next phase in OFI’s research is to build world-leading integrated and interdisciplinary understanding of the changing physical, biological and geochemical function of the North Atlantic Ocean and its Arctic gateways, identifying the impact these changes have on Atlantic Canada’s coastal communities.

OFI expects to fund two to five large projects — consortia representing academic, government, business, Indigenous and international researchers, Indigenous leaders and coastal community members. The funding total is $16 million, which means each research project should receive an average of approximately $1 million per year for four years (all projects are expected to be completed in 2023). To qualify, each consortia research project must be led by a principal investigator who is a faculty or staff member, or adjunct faculty, at UPEI, Dalhousie University or Memorial University of Newfoundland.

In recognition of the outstanding performance and dedication of our faculty and staff, a number of annual awards have been created to acknowledge their efforts and achievements. 

Up to 10 Presidential Awards of Merit for UPEI Faculty, Librarians, Clinical Veterinary Professionals and Clinical Nursing Instructors and four categories of Presidential Awards of Merit for UPEI Staff will be awarded in 2019. These awards will be presented during a Celebration of Colleagues to be held on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 from 10:30am-12:00pm in McMillan Hall, W.A. Murphy Student Centre. 

Susan Connolly, Associate Vice-President, Human Resources & Legal, will lead the process and chair the committee to select award recipients.
