In May 2025, the UPEI Board of Governors approved a balanced budget for the year ended April 30, 2026 (i.e., 2025–2026 fiscal year). UPEI’s consolidated financial statements for that fiscal year were audited by our external auditors, Doane Grant Thornton LLP, and received an unqualified audit opinion. UPEI’s external audit provides independent assurance that “the accompanying consolidated financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the consolidated financial position of the University of Prince Edward Island as at April 30, 2026.”
UPEI submitted the audited 2025–2026 financial statements to the Board of Governors on October 6, 2026, for approval. The approved statements are now posted to the Publications page on the upei.ca website.

The Department of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Human Rights (EDIHR), which includes the Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office (SVPRO), and the Human Rights Office (HRO), has moved!
Our new location is in the W. A. Murphy Student Centre, on the 2nd Floor, above the UPEI Bookstore. We are now neighbours with the UPEI Health and Wellness Centre. You can access our office via the stairs or elevator across from the Bookstore.
The Department of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Human Rights is a place you can come with concerns relating to harassment, discrimination, and sexual violence at UPEI. We can provide trauma-informed support; referrals to helpful services; safety planning; workplace and academic accommodations; information about applicable policies; information about reporting and resolution options; and more. We are here to help.
If you have included our contact information on your course syllabus, program materials, or other resources, we ask that you update them with our new location. This important step will reduce additional barriers for folks trying to access support. We appreciate your help!

A new book titled "Moral Puzzles: Contractarian Fix," by Dr. Malcolm Murray, professor of philosophy at UPEI, will be launched on Monday, October 19, at 7 pm in the Faculty Lounge (Room 201), SDU Main Building. Hosted by the Bookmark, this event is free, and all are welcome.
Standard approaches to moral puzzles rest on a shared premise: that morality is timeless, written into the fabric of the universe. In Dr. Murray’s view, morality is not a set of enduring truths but the outcome of human evolution and natural selection. This social contract—a system of rules that rational, self-interested agents agree to follow because it enables a safer, more co-operative social life—highlights the difference between idealized moral theories and the real-world applications that often fall short of those ideals. In elegant, entertaining prose, "Moral Puzzles" ventures beyond the popular understanding of morality as a natural product, revisiting problems in moral philosophy with striking results. Dr. Murray invites readers to rediscover the central puzzles of moral theory through fresh arguments and interpretations.
Dr. Murray is the author of six philosophy books including "Morals and Consent: Contractarian Solutions to Ethical Woes." In addition, he has written a collection of one-act plays titled "The Philosopher," and his short stories have appeared in "Snow Softly Falling," "Riptides," "Galleon," and "Fiction Fix."

The Canadian Association for Graduate Studies Community of Practice on Graduate Supervision is a webinar entitled National Community of Practice on Graduate Supervision: AI in the Supervisory Relationship: Conversations Worth Having
Generative AI has become an integral part of graduate research, raising important questions for supervisors and students alike. This webinar examines how supervisors can guide students toward the ethical and effective use of generative AI in their writing, and how institutions are addressing instances of undisclosed AI use in thesis preparation. It also considers the potential of AI tools to support meaningful dialogue with students about their thinking, writing, and research practices. Participants will engage in a thoughtful discussion of these issues and gain practical approaches to inform their own supervisory practice.

The Biosafety Officer (BSO) would like to inform the UPEI community that there is a new Biohazardous Agent Transfer Form Instruction document and an updated Biohazardous Agent Transfer Form (Revision 2.0) which are now available on the Biosafety SharePoint site. These documents outline the requirements and approval process for the transfer, shipment, receipt, import, export, and purchase of biohazardous materials.
All faculty, staff, and students involved in work with biohazardous materials are encouraged to review the new instructions and begin using the updated form immediately. The revised process is intended to support compliance with applicable biosafety, biosecurity, transportation, and regulatory requirements while ensuring the safe handling and tracking of biohazardous materials across the University.
As a reminder, the BSO must be notified before the import, export, purchase, receipt, shipment, or transfer of any biohazardous material, and a completed Biohazardous Agent Transfer Form must be submitted for review and approved prior to proceeding with these activities. No transfer or purchase of biohazardous agents may occur until approval has been obtained from the BSO.
