Dr. Gerry Marangoni, Chemistry Department, St. Francis Xavier University will present a seminar on Wednesday, November 6 at 12:30 pm. Dr. Marangoni’s presentation is entitled “Wiggly, Squiggly, and Slimy Micelles (or the Venkmen Effect) - Viscoelastic Surfactant Solutions.” The seminar will be held in the Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre, Lecture Theatre Room 212. All are welcome.
The next blood donor clinic will be at the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre on November 12 from 5:00–8:00 pm. This is an important clinic because of the decline in donors during the cold & flu season, and with the November 11 long weekend. Statutory holidays are a lost day of collections and long weekends often mean extra travel, more accidents, and regrettably, a greater need for blood. This is an evening clinic for a change with convenient hours. Please take a few minutes of your time, to give someone in need of blood, a lifetime. Appointments are recommended and may be made by calling 1-888-2-DONATE. Walk-ins are welcome. Allen Veale - UPEI Mobile Clinic Facilitator - 566-0988

At the next Research on Tap, join us for a discussion about kids and sports. In an effort to emphasize fun, and de-emphasize competition, some regions have banned keeping score in competitive games. Dr. Dany MacDonald, assistant professor of Kinesiology, will lead a discussion titled: Should we stop keeping score in kids' sport? The discussion begins at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, November 5 at the Pourhouse, above the Old Triangle Irish Alehouse in Charlottetown. Research on Tap is a series of public discussions with UPEI researchers. For more information, contact Dave Atkinson at (902)620-5117, datkinson@upei.ca.

UPEI students are invited to volunteer for the “I’m Thumbody” program, a self-esteem program sponsored by the Canadian Mental Health Association, in partnership with Bell Aliant. It is designed for Grade 3 children and presented in the classroom by trained volunteers. The program started on PEI in 1989 as a pilot project in some of the Summerside area schools. Now, the program is offered across PEI, and is delivered to over 1000 students each year. There are over 40 volunteers involved with the “I’m Thumbody” program. Volunteers are responsible for delivering the program and they are required to attend an orientation session (usually about 1.5 hours) by the Canadian Mental Health Association. Volunteers must be comfortable presenting in front of a classroom, enjoy working with children, have transportation to the classroom, and complete a police record check. The program delivery involves two one-hour sessions in the classroom (one hour one week and one hour the following week). The first session focuses on the awareness of the uniqueness of self and others, and the second session focuses on the recognition and acceptance of feelings. The volunteers provide students with opportunities to explore these concepts through a wide-range of activities including discussions, viewing DVDs, learning a theme song, and making their own thumbprint buttons. If you would like more information on the program, please contact Lori Morris, Provincial “I’m Thumbody” Coordinator at (902) 628-3650 or communications@cmha.pe.ca. Please encourage students to volunteer for this great opportunity!

*WARNING* – We’re seeing an increasing number of reports of infections by the CryptoLocker virus. It is a virus that encrypts Microsoft Office documents on your local computer as well as files on the network. The only recovery is to restore from backup. Be very careful in opening up any attachment as most report that it was an attachment to a bogus FedEx or UPS shipping notice or banking related email. Once infected, you will see a popup saying your files are encrypted and demanding a ransom to get them back. If you think you may be infected, Immediately shut down your computer and notify ITSS helpdesk (566-0465) that you believe you have been infected by the CryptoLocker Virus. As a general rule be very cautious about emails received from people you don't know. Never open attachments unless you are sure of what they are.. Even messages from friends and associates may be as a result of malware infecting the senders computer. If in doubt, contact the sender to verify that the message and attachment was knowingly sent to you. ITSS
