Canadian Catholic Campus Ministers host an annual lecture named for their first Episcopal Liaison, Bishop Sherlock. This year's lecture is presented by Jesuit Brother Guy Consolmagno SJ, Vatican Astronomer. The event is 7pm, May 28 in the Duffy Amphitheatre of UPEI's Duffy Science Centre. “Science is where I get to spend time with the Creator,” says Br. Consolmagno. “When God invites me to encounter him in the things that have been made, as St. Paul puts it in his letter to the Romans, God is setting up a game we get to play together. It is a game that, on top of everything else, tells me he loves me. And for that, I am grateful to be an astronomer.”

CURIE is a reciprocal insurance exchange for universities across Canada who share losses arising from their operating risks. An inspector contracted through CURIE will be conducting laboratory inspections on campus on May 19 & 20. The Health and Safety Advisor and/or the Biosafety Officer will be accompanying the inspector on these days, as well as possibly a safety committee chair. The lab inspections will be covered as a part of CURIE's role of providing a range of risk Management and loss protection services. The inspector, Andrew Steeves, will spend 5-10 minutes per lab. Upon his completion he will issue a report to the University listing the issues, risks and impact. This service is expected to be a valuable exercise as Andrew has expertise in areas such as building code, fire code & chemical storage. Note that the local safety committees will not be required to complete their annual inspections for these higher risk areas in 2015. Echo Lau, a recent Alumna of the UPEI Music Department, returns from Ottawa to present a solo piano recital at the Dr. Steel Recital Hall, UPEI Campus, on Saturday evening, 7:30 pm, May 16. Tickets will be available at the door: $15 adults, $10 seniors and students. Echo Lau, a native of Hong Kong, immigrated to Canada in 2004. During her school years she studied piano with Frances McBurnie and went on to the University of Prince Edward Island where she completed a Bachelor of Music degree in 2013 studying with piano professor, Dr. Frances Gray. Echo has represented PEI at the CFMTA National Piano Competition and several times at the National Music Festival after being the recipient of many top awards for performances in the Queen's County and PEI Provincial Music Festivals. She performed the Ravel Piano Concerto with the PEI Symphony Orchestra as the winner of the Suzanne Brenton Award. Echo often accompanies other musicians and has played for the UPEI Choir and as chief musician for some Kings Playhouse productions. In addition to her piano performances she has also played violin with the PEI Symphony, the Singing Strings, and the Strathgartney Chamber Orchestra. In September 2014 Echo received a generous two-year scholarship from the University of Ottawa to pursue the Master of Music degree in Piano Performance, At present she studies piano there with Professor Andrew Tunis and accompanies the Calixa-Lavallée Choir.

In August, the Atlantic Veterinary College at UPEI will offer its popular AVC Summer Academy for undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing a degree in veterinary medicine. The College's Summer Academy will provide students an exceptional opportunity to explore the profession in a hands-on, authentic way. The Atlantic Veterinary College Summer Academy is a five-day residential program where students interact with the College's faculty, staff and students through a variety of instructional approaches including classroom lectures, field trips, and hands-on sessions, all of which serve to expose students to the profession of veterinary medicine. We in the Nepalese community on Prince Edward island are deeply moved by the devastating earthquake in Nepal that claimed more than 7000 lives and the unimaginable loss of property and infrastructure. In this period of grief, the global community is responding with an overwhelming support for the rescue, relief, and reconstruction. Eight scenarios have been developed to guide further discussions during the for public consultation sessions. These stem from our deliberations on the feedback that we received from our April public consultation sessions where specific questions were used to guide discussions. We identified areas in need of clarification in order to provide additional input on critical parts of the academic plan. Feedback received from the open sessions will be used to build specific sections of the plan. The scenarios refer to real or simulated situations on campus where we would need to apply our academic values. The UPEI Department of Student Affairs is pleased to offer training in Mental Health First Aid as developed by the Mental Health Commission of Canada. This training is open to all UPEI students, staff and faculty. Taught by one of our counsellors, “Mental Health First Aid teaches first aid skills to help someone who is developing mental health problems or is experiencing a mental health crisis. Anyone can benefit from learning mental health first aid". It is a two day program which will be offered Wednesday June 3rd and Thursday June 4th in MacDougall Hall 328 from 9am to 4pm on campus. Enrolment is capped to 20 participants and registration is required. The University of Prince Edward Island covers the course fee, and included are the training, program manual, coffee, refreshment breaks and your certificate of completion which will be mailed out to you from the Mental Health Commission of Canada.
