With darkness setting in earlier these days, please remember to KEEP LIGHTS ON at the end of the day in common areas such as hallways, lobbies and other open areas within buildings. Security staff will turn the lights off when buildings are being locked.
There will be a mock fire exercise at the Duffy Science Centre, first floor on Monday November 9, starting at 6:15 pm (18:15 hours). The Charlottetown Fire Department will be participating in a live exercise with a number of their staff attending.
UPEI Security Services Division will be participating in the exercise with the fire department. The exercise is a “code 3” and no emergency lights or sirens will be used.

Dr. Christian Lacroix, Vice-President Academic, invites the campus community to join members of the MacLauchlan family; guest author, Dr. Roger Gordon; and recipients to celebrate the achievements of UPEI students, faculty and staff at the fourth annual MacLauchlan Prizes for Effective Writing Celebration. The Celebration will take place on Friday, November 13 at 1:30 pm in Schurman Market Square, Don and Marion McDougall Hall.
The awards recognize of the importance of effective writing as a foundational skill for academic success and lifelong learning and were established in 2011 by the MacLauchlan family to honour H. Wade MacLauchlan's contributions to the University and his 12 years of service as UPEI President and Vice-Chancellor from 1999-2011.

Facilities Management has taken a number of steps to deter the crows, including the installation of owl decoys across campus; however, we ask members of the campus community to refrain from feeding birds and other wildlife such as foxes.
While birds and other wildlife might seem hungry, feeding them just isn't a good idea. Here's why:
“People” food isn’t good for animals.
It makes wild animals lose their natural fear of people and they can become a nuisance.
Wild animals who depend on people for food can cause injuries or spread disease.
Thank-you for your co-operation.

Social Choice, Imputation and Partial Preferences: Making Better Group Decisions when Information is Hidden
Voting, or social choice, is a core component of many multiagent systems, allowing communities of agents to reach compromises or aggregate information. Voting systems based on ranked preferences can outperform simpler schemes, but have information requirements that are unrealistically high. I propose a new technique for determining the winner an election when most of the electorate is unwilling or unable to state their full preferences, using conventional machine learning algorithms. This novel “imputation-based” approach to social choice outperforms existing state of the art methods on real-world data, and provides a theoretical link between classification algorithms and social choice. Additional results include a characterization of the where the imputation-based approach will perform best, in terms of the margin of victory in a counterfactual election; a novel trajectory-based algorithm for learning preferences; and an axiomatic characterization of the fairness of different imputation methods. I will also briefly discuss other projects at the intersection of game theory, learning, and social choice.

Fire Extinguisher Training will be provided by the PEI Firefighters Association on Thursday, November 5 from 2:00pm-3:15 pm outside of the loading dock at the Central Utility Building. The session will include a short briefing on fire safety which will be followed by each participant using a fire extinguisher to put out a simulated fire.
Please register by contacting Angela Deighan at adeighan@upei.ca and identify what type of space you work in. Space is limited, therefore for this session, priority will be given to those who work in higher risk areas such as labs, workshops, etc.

In order to test the Konica Minolta units, provide more time for product/feature decisions and not to disrupt semester-end activities, a decision has been made to delay the conversion of Ricoh fleet to Konica-Minolta equipment until January 2016.
Budget authorities will soon be given more information about specific options - please watch for this in the upcoming weeks.
On November 13, between 10 and 1 in AVC Room 250S, the Printing and Photocopying Working Group will have 3 of the new Konica Minolta models available for your perusal.
Further details will be made available as this project progresses.
Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex will be on PEI, November 2 and 3, at the invitation of the Prince Edward Island Regiment.
As part of his working visit, he will be attending a Special Olympics PEI event at the UPEI Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre on Tuesday, November 3 from 10:00-11:00 am. Guests at this event are at the invitation of Special Olympics PEI.
Members of the campus community and the public can catch a glimpse of Prince Edward entering and exiting the Sports Centre, November 3, at his 10 am arrival or at his departure at 11 am.
The Earl received an honorary degree from UPEI at a special Convocation in 2007.
