Leon Liang and Mark Nabuurs, PhD students, will each present a seminar on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at 12:30 pm. Leon Liang's presentation is entitled "Natural Product Discovery through Co-culture Mimic Inductions" and Mark Nabuur's presentation is entitled  “NMR Structural Characterization of E/Z Isomerism in O-methyl aldoxime Ethers & Structural Insights into the Macrocyclic Structure of New Oximidine Natural Products”. Both seminars will be held in the Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre, Lecture Theatre, Room 212.

*SPUR: Summer Program for Undergraduate Research

UPEI Academic & Research Services invites undergraduate students working on a summer research project to SPUR 2017. Students will hear presentations by faculty members, learn about resources and be exposed to valuable information about careers in research.

Open to UPEI students ONLY, please join us Wednesdays, May 10-August 9 for weekly brown bag lunch sessions.

Applicant Requirements:
1. Open to UPEI students following their first, second or third year
2. Students must apply to Colleen Gallant, cgallant@upei.ca before Tuesday, April 18, 2017. You will be notified by Friday April 21, 2017 if you are accepted. To apply please send your name; the current year you are in; Department; Supervisor/Professor; your email and what your project will be about.
3. Students must attend 80% of lunch sessions to receive a $1000.00 stipend supplement.
4. No charge to participate

Program Details:
• Introductory/Orientation session will be held on Monday, May 8
• Brown bag lunch sessions will be held 12:00-1:00 pm weekly on Wednesday beginning May 10 with presentations by faculty members regarding their research careers
• Limited to 25 participants
• Research mandatory poster symposium and reception at the conclusion of the program. Students may invite their lab partners, mentors, etc. to their presentations and to a reception following the poster symposium
• Prizes presented for the top 3 posters at the poster symposium; $500.00 grant to offset costs associated with attending an academic conference

Join Jaclyn Borden, Stars for Life Foundation, for an enlightening presentation and resources on working with students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) on March 31 at 2:00 pm in McDougall Hall Rm. 246.

This presentation will give a brief overview of the Autism Spectrum and how it affects individuals. It will discuss the characteristics and behaviours associated with autism, as well as the sensory issues often experienced by those on the spectrum.

A lecture entitled The Demand for Applied Mathematics in Supply Chain and Manufacturing will be presented by Mr. Pat Sinnott (Former executive at Ernst & Young, former VP at Canadian Tire, UPEI alumnus (B.Sc. Math ‘76) and Chair of UPEI Board of Governors) on Monday, March 27 from 3:00-3:50 pm in MCDH 246.

Abstract: The ever-increasing availability and affordability of software and computing power is making it much easier to capture, store and manipulate data, to develop algorithms, models and engines to act on and the analyze data; and to interpret the results to make better business decisions. These technology advances are making it possible for many more organizations to benefit from applied mathematics. Pat will talk about his experience leading supply chain and technology functions in major companies and provide several remarkable examples where mathematical optimization was used to reduce cost and enable superior execution across a retail supply chain.

Due to the University Closure on March 23, the presentation by Dr. Sarah Galletly entitled, “'World famed Island novelist' and 'canny businesswoman': L. M. Montgomery’s presence in Canadian periodicals", has been rescheduled to 3:15 pm on Friday, March 24 in SDU Main 211. 

Dr. Galletly, of James Cook University, is a candidate for the inaugural Chair in L.M. Montgomery Studies and Communication, Leadership, and Culture.

Over the past several months, the Search Committee for the Vice-President Academic and Research (President Alaa Abd-El-Aziz, Dr. Cathy Ryan, Dr. Kathy Gottschall-Pass, Mr. Scott Harper, Ms. Margo Thompson, Ms. Tara Judson, Mr. John Rix) has received and considered expressions of interest and supporting documents from potential candidates for the position. Four outstanding candidates proceeded to the interview process. As a result, one candidate was selected by the committee to deliver a 30-minute public presentation to campus. Dr. Robert Gilmour, Jr. presented on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 to the campus community.
