Jay Naidoo, political and soial activist, has been a leader in the anti-apartheid movement and served as the founding General Secretary of the Congress of South African Trade Unions. Mr. Naidoo is author of the book Change: organizing tomorrow, today, which warns: “Unless there is significant change, the world is heading to an explosion. The growing gap between rich and poor is dangerous and unsustainable.”

On Thursday, June 1st, Mr. Naidoo will present at UPEI in Irving Chemistry Centre, Room 104, from 1:30pm to 3:30pm. Naidoo's discussion explores why people are poor when we walk on gold, diamonds, and resources that fuel the global economy; the extent to which the technological revolution has changed the way we live, organize ourselves, and work; and what the future may hold for education, training and jobs.

The thirteenth annual PEI Nursing Research to Practice Conference is being held May 26 in Don and Marion McDougall Hall at the University of Prince Edward Island. The conference brings together practicing nurses, academic researchers, and students to hear and share the latest research from their respective fields of practice. This year’s conference explores how nurses can work towards improving the patient and family experience.

Conference Keynote

Dr. Tara Sampalli is Director of Research and Innovation, Primary Health Care and Chronic Disease Management, at the Nova Scotia Health Authority and an assistant professor of Medical Informatics at Dalhousie University. Dr. Sampalli effectively blends research with practice, bringing the novel concept of “embedded research” into healthcare. Her research interests include care models for chronic disease management, patient centered care and multi-morbidities, integrated models of care, knowledge management, and application of innovative IT solutions in healthcare.

The 2017 PEI Nursing Research To Practice Conference is co-sponsored by UPEI’s School of Nursing and Health PEI.

I am pleased to announce a search will be initiated for qualified candidates for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Applied Communication, Leadership, and Culture at UPEI.

The University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) invites a highly engaged academic to join our research team in the role of Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Applied Communication, Leadership, and Culture. The successful candidate for this position will have a program of research that fits within the broad, interdisciplinary category of the Social Studies of Science; they will have extensive and varied experience with digital humanities tools (including GIS or alternative mapping software), both within their own scholarly work and within the classroom; they will have a strong record of teaching communication and leadership to undergraduate and graduate students, and a clear understanding of how their own academic research intersects with their teaching of these subjects. Preference will be given to those candidates who have developed a research profile that suggests obvious future collaboration with members of the UPEI research community.

A CRC Application Review Committee for this opportunity is being convened and I would welcome your suggestions on members for this committee. Please contact me by Email  (rgilmour@upei.ca) or phone (566-0637). Inquiries about the Chair can be sent to Dr. Lisa Chilton, lchilton@upei.ca

More information on the Canada Research Chairs program may be found at www.chairs.gc.ca.

Additional information about the new Chair can be found at www.upei.ca/research/research-chairs and the UPEI’s Human Resource web site.

Join us for the keynote presentation from Christina Bosch and a reception at the Second pan-Canadian Conference on UDL, May 31 at 6 pm in the WA Murphy Centre at UPEI. Bosch employs User Experience Design methods to investigate instruction and learning in juvenile corrections, and to co-design, with users, inquiry-based UDL curricula to meet the unique learning needs of incarcerated youth. Through a shared focus on removing barriers to the achievement of goals, UDL and UX in education implicitly recognize a ubiquitous international value in education systems: transferability of experience. Inclusive education adopts this value but rejects the idea of “disposable populations” and aims to facilitate high-quality participation amongst all learners in the interactions and relationships that constitute learning environments. Bosch will examine how the UDL and UX frameworks begin to bridge the well-known gaps in education—between research versus practice, static versus transferable learning, learners versus teachers—by offering accessible, collaborative methods of designing with, rather than just for, learners.

Registration for the conference can be accessed at https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/second-pan-canadian-conference-on-universal-design-for-learning-tickets-31710744691

Christina has also written an introduction to the themes of her presentation on the Conference Blog.

Sending commercial messages is regulated by Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL). CASL came into effect in 2014 with a three year grace period when organizations could rely on implied consent in many situations. The rules around consent change on July 1, 2017. Time is running out to obtain express consent so you can continue to send commercial messages. If you are sending emails out to a mailing list, you should consider whether there is any commercial content, and whether you have consent to send those emails. An example of a commercial message would be promoting programs run by non-University organizations.

The potential consequences for non-compliance are serious, including fines of up to $10 million.

For more examples, information about CASL, and details about how it applies to UPEI check here. If you are still unsure, contact the Chief Access to Information and Privacy Officer at pjwheatley@upei.ca

Security Services has noticed an increase in traffic violations on campus and would like to kindly remind the motoring community of the need to follow the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) while on campus roadways. Our roadways and inner campus are speed restricted areas as they are a high pedestrian/traffic zones. You may not be aware that the HTA applies to UPEI roadways and the Security Police officers may issue Summary Offence tickets for the violations. Your cooperation in ensuring a safe and secure environment is greatly appreciated.

EastTech Engineering Consultants have been commissioned to perform some geotechnical investigation and material testing for some areas on Campus, they will be on-site on Thursday, May 25th digging test pits in the Reserved Parking area in front of Don and Marion McDougall Hall, Parking Lot B, F and on the ring road extension between Blanchard Hall and Bernardine Hall, they will be doing 2 – 3 test pits in each location. This work involves the use of a backhoe to dig the test pits to retrieve the samples, each test pit location will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.
