The Faculty Development Office is offering two afternoon workshops and consultations for anyone interested in creating or updating a teaching dossier: for promotion, tenure, or teaching awards. The workshops will be facilitated by Shannon Murray, and participants will have the opportunity for individual consultations in the weeks after the workshops. The two sessions are:

• Introducing the Teaching Dossier (2:30-4:00, February 2 – location TBA)

After a brief introduction to the history and purpose of a teaching dossier, a panel of colleagues experienced in working with teaching dossiers will share their advice about what to do and what to avoid. The rest of the session will look at the requirements and the options for documenting your teaching practice.

• Starting a Statement of Teaching Philosophy (2:30-4:00, February 9 – location TBA)

A statement of teaching philosophy is an essential opening for most teaching dossiers: and it signals the central beliefs and practices that the rest of the dossier will demonstrate. This workshop will take participants through a variety of strategies for crafting an effective statement, looking at examples from across disciplines. Participants will leave with a sound basic structure for their STPs.

You may attend either or both, but please register with Gerald Wandio (fdo@upei.ca) by January 26. 

Do you have plans yet for the winter break? How about taking part in some interesting professional development?

For two full days on February 20th and 21st, attend a workshop that focuses around the concept of practice teaching. A small group of peer instructors get together to teach short lessons in front of each other from a prepared lesson plan in order to gain feedback on their teaching in a low-stakes and collegial environment. Sessions will also be video-recorded and participants will be provided with a copy of their sessions for later review. Co-sponsored by the E-Learning Office and the Faculty Development Office, the workshop is designed to help enhance the teaching effectiveness of new and/or experienced educators at UPEI. Participants will also have the opportunity to work at the process of giving and receiving feedback.

The Faculty of Education formally announces the upcoming PhD defense by Mary MacPhee. Mary will be defending her dissertation titled "The Experience of Non-Francophone Parents with Children in Minority-language French Schools in Prince Edward Island: A Mixed Methods Study".

The PhD defense presentation is open to the public and will take place on Thursday February 22 from 10:00 to 10:30 am in the Health Sciences Building.

How is my course going and how am I doing? With the semester nearing the half way point, these are great questions to ask your students since there's still time to make minor changes that could have a major impact on overall student learning outcomes. In this workshop you will learn what kinds of questions to ask to help you get the feedback you need from your students. You will also learn how to create a quick online survey for your questions that will make data collection and analysis easy. Offered, by the E-Learning Office, you can choose to attend this workshop on one of two dates.

The workshop will be offered on January 25, 1:00-2:00 pm and again on January 29, 10:00-11:00 am. Robertson Library, Room 265 will be the location. Register!

Moodle's Gradebook is a way of tracking grades and sharing them with students right inside Moodle. The E-Learning Office is hosting an introductory workshop for using the Gradebook in your courses. This session will cover the basics of setting up a gradebook, entering grades in the grader report, sending your final grades to the Registrar's Office. If you're interested in attending, please sign up here. 

The worshop will be offered on Thursday, January 18, 2018 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm in the Robertson Library - LINC Computer Lab (RL 265). If you cannot attend the session but have questions or need help, please contact us at moodle@upei.ca.

Do your students have trouble locating appropriate secondary sources for their papers and reports–and even more trouble integrating them properly? Please come to a special session that will address these challenges and attempt to strategize some solutions.

A panel consisting of Melissa Belvadi and Yolanda Hood from the Robertson Library, Wendy Shilton from the English Department, and Gerald Wandio from the Faculty Development Office will briefly discuss their experiences and then engage participants in a discussion of the issues. The session will be held from 2:00 till 3:00 on Thursday, January 18, in the Faculty Lounge of SDU Main Building.

How can I make the shift from lecturer to facilitator in order to promote more class discussion? What kind of questions should I ask or activities should I set up to stimulate more student engagement? How do I get students to take an active role in their learning? This last question sums up the aim of this workshop. Instructors do the teaching. Students do the learning. If the two are to mesh successfully then students must take, and be encouraged to take, a more active role in their learning.

Offered by the E-Learning Office, this workshop will help instructors create a more engaging class environment. This workshop is offered on two separate occasions. January 23, 10:30-11:30 am or February 1, 1:00-2:00 pm. The location for each is the Robertson Library, Room 265.

The Canadian Association for Curriculum Studies (CACS) calls for nominations for the Ted T. Aoki Award for Distinguished Service within the Field of Canadian Curriculum Studies. The purpose of this award is to recognize individuals who have made major contributions through research, teaching, and/or professional service in the field of curriculum studies in Canada. Candidates must have made major contributions to the field of Canadian curriculum studies through scholarship and service over an extended period, usually at least ten years.
