The UPEI Human Performance lab seeks volunteers for a study on the protective effects of Curcumin (an ingredient in some curry spices) against muscle fatigue. Volunteers must be healthy, relatively fit, and between the ages of 18 and 45. The team is examining the effect of Curcumin and inflammation-inducing exercise on recovery after repeated bouts of downhill running. Participants must be able to commit to nine visits to the Human Performance Lab at UPEI over the course of the study. Join Dr. Wendy Shilton for a talk titled: "Could 'Infusing' University Writing with Narrative Medicine Practices Promote Public Health?" on Tuesday, February 11 at 7:00 pm the Faculty Lounge, SDU Main Building. This talk explores the burgeoning multi-disciplinary field of Narrative Medicine (NM) and asks whether it could be effectively applied in university writing courses to strengthen public health benefits. Among the topics examined are the origins of NM within the medical humanities; what is meant by “narrative” in NM; how NM connects the Arts, Humanities, and Sciences; and, ultimately, what NM has to do with undergraduate critical literacy practices that potentially could be integrated across the curriculum to promote greater quality and equality in health and healthcare for all.

Dr. Ian Pottie, Chemistry Department, Mount Saint Vincent University will present a seminar on Wednesday, February 11 at 12:30 pm. Dr. Pottie’s presentation is entitled “Expanding the synthetic methodologies of the nitro group; could it lead to a new chemical entity to diagnose Alzheimer's disease?" The seminar will be held in the Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre, Lecture Theatre Room 212.

Grant Curtis from AVC's Biomedical Sciences will defend his Master of Arts in Island Studies (MAIS) thesis Friday, February 13, from 1:30-3:30 pm in AVC Lecture Theatre B. Grant's presentation is entitled Stepping Stones to the New World: Islandness and Migration from Southeastern Ireland to Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, and the Miramichi of New Brunswick, 1700-1850. Grant's supervisors are Dr. Ed MacDonald and Dr. James Moran, from the Department of History. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The Office of Research and Graduate Studies, along with the UPEI Graduate Students Association, UPEI Student Union, and UPEI Research Services, will be hosting a 3MT (3 Minute Thesis) competition this March. This is an open call to any graduate student who would like to participate in this competition. First place will receive $200.00 and a trip to Dalhousie to compete in the Regional 3MT competition. Second place will be $100.00 and third place will receive $50.00. Competition will take place over three nights—qualifying heats will be Thursday March 5 and 12 at 7pm at the Wave. Prince Edward Island writers are invited to submit an Expression of Interest for this year’s Writers Exchange with Tasmania. The successful applicant will be offered a three-week residency in Hobart this September. Writers must have: • a high calibre of published work in any genre(s); • a background in teaching creative writing; • public speaking skills; and • the ability to travel to Tasmania in September, 2015. Applicants must submit: • a completed Expression of Interest; • a sample of their work; and • the names and contact details of two referees. Email applications must be received by 28 February, 2015 and sent to: director@tasmanianwriters.org. The successful applicant will be contacted in mid-March. Dr. Johanna Wolf, Associate Professor for the School of Environment and Sustainability at Royal Roads University, British Columbia, is a candidate for UPEI's new Canada Research Chair in Sustainability, Resilience, and Island Contexts. Dr. Wolf will make two presentations, both of which will be open to the campus and research communities. These presentations, original scheduled for February 9 and 10, have been postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date. The Island Peace Committee and CUPE Global Justice are excited to announce their partnership with Cinema Politica Charlottetown to bring the First Annual Social Justice Film Festival. From February 13 to 15, the festival will bring together award winning films on a broad array of social justice topics tying into the festival’s overarching theme of ‘Peace and Prosperity, NOT War and Austerity’. The public is invited to the First Annual Social Justice Film Festival will be held at UPEI’s Don and Marion McDougall Hall, room 242. Following the films, there will be brief discussions led by community leaders, groups and organizations. There will be door prizes and popcorn available. Admission to the festival is by donation. A new website has been developed to assist entrance students in finding the award opportunities that are available to them. All incoming students from high school who apply by March 1 are automatically considered for academic based scholarships, and there are also a number of awards that require students to submit additional application material. These awards can be based on such criteria as program of study; leadership, extra-curricular, athletic or community activities, or also financial need. The new Entrance Award Cycle website, found at http://www.upei.ca/studentlife/entrance-award-cycle, enables students to clearly identify the awards that require separate application, most with a deadline of March 1.
