A number of instructors at UPEI use Turning Technology clickers in their classroom. This meeting has been organized to get a better sense of who is using them and how they are being used, talk about any updates, and discuss the differences in using the physical device and the app for both the instructors and the students. Matthew Saunderson the Turning Technology representative for UPEI will be present to introduce updates and answer any questions. The University, through the Department of Development and Alumni Engagement, hosts Summer Reunion Weekend every July to celebrate our over 23,000 alumni. This year, many of the events focus on the SDU Class of '65, celebrating its 50th anniversary, and the SDU Class of '55. Faculty and staff are invited to the Staff, Faculty, and “All Years” Alumni Mixer on Thursday, July 23 from 3:00–5:00 pm in Schurman Market Square in Don and Marion McDougall Hall. Senior management is encouraging all to attend. This will be a great opportunity to kick off the weekend, and mix and mingle with a cross section of our campus community, while enjoying some refreshments, and entertainment. Everyone is welcome!

Jim Groom 7pm Wed August 5th KCI What kinds of questions and opportunities does the open web raise for scholars? How can universities best support academic identity development and open web research among graduate students, faculty, and affiliated scholars? The University of Mary Washington in Virginia has been providing students, faculty and staff with an innovative, web-based platform that enables them to own, manage and migrate the digital work they create over the course of their academic careers. The initiative, called Domain of One's Own, recognizes and codifies the importance of digital agency for each and every learner on campus, and provides the means of enabling them to truly inhabit the web at scale. The platform undergirding the pioneering work of Domain of One's Own is the open web and it provides the backbone for a broader, curricular-wide push for cross-disciplinary digital fluency. In a session open to the campus, the public, and the UPEI MultiDisciplinary Graduate Research Conference, Jim Groom, founder of Domain of One's Own, takes up questions of identity and agency for 21st century higher education. An engaging and internationally-recognized keynote speaker, Jim will explore strategies and challenges for scholars looking to take control of their identity online.

The Department of Student Affairs, in partnership with the Student Diversity Office and the UPEI Rainbow Alliance, will be raising the pride flag on Monday, July 27, 2015 at 12:00 pm at the flag plaza near Kelley Memorial Building. The raising of the flag is to recognize that UPEI supports all of its students, faculty, and staff and to celebrate PEI Pride Week. PEI Pride will be raising flags that same day at other locations across the province.

As part of our ongoing tree pruning, maintenance, and inspection program, we have detected Dutch Elm disease in one of our elm trees on campus; this elm tree is located in the Main Quadrangle. Unfortunately, this tree has to be removed and properly disposed of immediately to help avoid the spread of the disease to other elm trees. This removal is scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 18, 2015. Two (2) trees will be planted to replace the removed tree, in either the existing location or at a new location on campus. While the contractors have been instructed that the work be executed with the least possible interference or disturbance to the campus community, a certain amount of disruption is inevitable. Ethics protocols that involve ‘more than minimal risk’ must be reviewed by the full UPEI Research Ethics Board. The next deadline for submitting these protocols is Friday August 7 2015. They will be reviewed at the August meeting. Protocols involving ‘more than minimal risk’ that are received after August 7 will be reviewed at the September meeting. Other ethics protocol submissions, including new applications that do not involve ‘more than minimal risk’, renewals, and amendments may be submitted at any time. Effective immediately, Ancillary Services will be taking over responsibility for the administration of temporary liquor licenses for special events on campus. Certain designated areas across campus have permanent liquor licenses, but for all events involving the serving and sale of liquor held in other areas, an application for a temporary liquor license must be requested from the PEI Liquor Commission. So, requests for temporary liquor licenses, and all other inquiries concerning the sale and serving of liquor on campus should be forwarded to Jonathan Oliver, Director of Ancillary Services at joliver@upei.ca and copied to Pamela McGuigan at pmcguigan@upei.ca. Along with the welcoming of the summer weather, we want to remind those who work in a laboratory that safety is just as important in the summer as it is any other time of the year. Information regarding personal protective equipment (PPE), including clothing, is available in the UPEI Laboratory Safety Manual in Section 4. https://files.upei.ca/hr/hs_part1laboratorysafetymanual.pdf - Section 4.6 (p.43) discusses protective clothing in laboratory settings such as pants, shirts & lab coats, as being necessary to prevent skin from being exposed to chemical/biological agents. (long skirts to the ankle would also cover the legs safely) - Section 4.8.1 (p.47) indicates that suitable footwear for labs must cover and protect the entire foot. - As a rule of thumb for eye protection: if there's anything that you or others in your area are working with that you would not want in your eye, then wear eye protection. Supervisors are responsible to ensure that compliance takes place. Dr. Christine Savidge will be interviewing for the open, tenure-track faculty position in small animal internal medicine in the Department of Companion Animals at the Atlantic Veterinary College. Dr. Savidge graduated from Cornell University College of Agriculture & Life Sciences with a BSc. in 2001; received her DVM in 2005 from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine and completed both an internship and a residency program at Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston. She is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. As part of the interview process, Dr. Savidge has been asked to present a 50-minute lecture suitable for 3rd year DVM students. Any interested faculty / staff are invited to attend.
