Open Educational Resources have the ability to eliminate the costs to students for textbooks and other learning materials, but they also empower students and faculty to work in new ways. This presentation will explore how we can save money for students, while also transforming our teaching and radically centering learners in their own educations. We will take a look at how free, openly-licensed digital materials can be incorporated into any course in any discipline, and explore new ways of using technology to connect our students and their work to the world outside of the the university.

The Atlantic Association for Research in the Mathematical Sciences' (AARMS) Collaborative Research Group in Iterated Function Systems (IFS), Fractals, Invariant Measures and Applications presents the first event of its seminar series. Entitled "Fractals and images", the seminar will presented by Dr. Franklin Mendivil (Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Acadia University) via skype.

Abstract: Many people have seen the incredibly intricate images that can be generated using fractals. But can fractals be useful to generate “normal” images (like photos)? In this talk, we discuss fractals, digital images, image compression, and combine them all together in fractal image compression.
The IFS, Fractals, Invariant Measures, and Applications Collaborative Research Group is administered by UPEI's Shafiqul Islam, and includes members Franklin Mendivil and Tara Taylor (St. Francis Xavier University).
The campus community is invited to attend a seminar given by PhD candidate Ashok Somalraju, entitled the "Advances and implications of genome editing technologies."

Last year, UPEI and PEI Health and Wellness combined to offer a hot bowl of soup in a safe environment - healthy food for mental health. This year, gardens are adding physical health to our plan.
To increase sustainability, we invited the campus to donate bowls and spoons. We received 75 bowls and 15 spoons, and installed soap and sanitizer at the Chaplaincy Centre to decrease our footprint. As cottages close, we are hoping for more spoons and bowls. Donations can be left at the Chaplaincy Centre.
Our first event will be Wednesday October 19, 11:30 am -1:00 pm. Drop by with a bowl for a soul!

Hello all singing enthusiasts! World Singing Day is a great opportunity to bring people together and share some inspirational songs (including "One Voice" by the Wailin Jennies, "Everybody Loves Saturday Night", and "Clean Water" by Theresa Doyle). This year, World Singing Day takes place Saturday, October 22.
The AIRS UPEI and Community Multicultural Choir & Song Circle invites you to join in a celebration of World Singing Day at the Charlottetown Farmer’s Market, at 11:30 am, October 22. What better place for this event than the Farmer’s Market, with its Island grown, environmentally friendly produce, and wholesome prepared foods representing many cultures from around the world.
In the event of massive interest and/or inclement weather, we have booked the UPEI's W.A. Murphy Student Centre (McMillan Hall), but with good luck, the weather will be splendid and provide a great opportunity to be inside or outside at the Market. On Thursday, October 27 at 10:00 am, Robertson Library 312, Robert Gilmour will introduce and re-launch the new IslandScholar and data.upei.ca. Dawn Hooper and Donald Moses from the Robertson Library will demonstrate the services and answer questions.
Also on Thursday, October 27 at 7:00 pm, the Robertson Library will partner with the Open Data Book Club to host a special event. First, the Open Data Book Club will introduce
its activities related to Open Data. Following that we will have two speakers: Dr. Adam Fenech, Director of UPEI Climate Lab, will speak on "The Value of Open Data in Research" and Mary-Ann MacSwain, Data Analyst at the UPEI Centre for Health and Community Research will speak on "Health Data in an Open Data World."

PhD students Qammar Almas and Adam Proud will each present a seminar on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at 12:30 pm. Qammar Almas's presentation is entitled "Novel Computational Approaches in a Big Data Context: Application to Dative Bonding" and Adam Proud's presentation is entitled "Quantifying Electronegativity Using Localized Molecular Orbitals." The seminars will be held in the Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre, Lecture Theatre, Room 212. All are welcome!
Canadian Blood Services is on campus this Thursday October 20 at the W. A. Murphy Student Centre. There will be a blood drive as well as recruitment for stem cell donors.

Everyone is invited to a special seminar delivered by Dr. Fred Colbourne titled "Intracerebral Hemorrhage: Challenges in Neuroprotection and Repair." Dr. Colbourne is a professor at the University of Alberta and a Canada Research Chair in Intracerebral Hemorrhagic Stroke.His research focuses on experimental treatments for ischemic and hemorrhagic brain injury. He has studied therapeutic hypothermia since the early 1990s starting in rodent models of global ischemia. Presently, he is evaluating this treatment for intracerebral hemorrhage. He also studies a number of other treatment strategies (e.g., rehabilitation) in his translation-oriented research.

Dr. Tonya Stewart, a candidate for the open, two-year term community practice position in AVC's Department of Companion Animals will be interviewed on Tuesday, October 18, 2016. As part of this interview process, Dr. Stewart has been asked to provide a seminar to the campus community. The seminar is called "Obesity in Cats and Dogs" and will take place at 12:30 pm, in rooms 286B and 286C N, The McCain Foundation Learning Commons.

Ethics protocols that involve ‘more than minimal risk’ must be reviewed by the full UPEI Research Ethics Board. The next deadline for submitting these protocols is Friday, November 4, 2016. They will be reviewed at the November meeting. Protocols involving ‘more than minimal risk’ that are received after November 4 will be reviewed at the December meeting.
Other ethics protocol submissions, including new applications that do not involve ‘more than minimal risk’, renewals, and amendments may be submitted at any time. They will be sent for delegated review as soon as all necessary forms are received.

Calling all singers! The UPEI Multicultural Choir and Song Circle will be meeting this Tuesday, October 18, from 4:30 to 5:30 pm in the Robertson Library Building, on the basement level, room 103. This area is also accessible by an elevator, if needed (call Hailey – see below).
The multicultural choir is in its sixth year, and is a non-audition, open, free, and fun activity which brings people from campus and the community together, sharing songs from cultures all around the world! All are welcome.
