UPEI Christmas Skate - Tuesday, December 6
Join us for a skate and some hot chocolate from 11:30 am- 1:00 pm, Tuesday, December 6 at the Bell Aliant Centre , ice surface B.
Time to get creative. Join your co-workers in decorating your office for the Christmas Tree Decorating Contest. Judging will be held from 11 am – noon on Thursday, December 15. Please register your office with Angela Marchbank.
This isn’t your weekly announcement of another SCENT blog post to go take a look at. Instead, it’s a big thank you, as the fall 2016 semester comes to a close, from SCENT to the campus community—for engaging so richly with our weekly blog and this semester’s theme of “what is university for?” The 12 blog posts for this semester elicited 1956 views and 57 comments, suggesting to us that a lot of you are reading and no doubt having other kinds of conversations about the posts. Apparently, our most popular blog posts were #2 and #5, and—no surprise—September and October were the busiest months. We think this is a huge success, as we aim to provoke and educate, and to get us all thinking together about the complexity of issues around this central theme. Stay tuned for the second week of January, when we’ll return with another semester’s worth of posts on the related and equally provocative theme “whom is university for?” Have a great break! And if you’re looking for some reading, and haven’t checked out all the posts yet, head on over to projects.upei.ca/scent and catch up on this semester’s articles.

The third annual PEI Weather Trivia Calendar is available now and will be launched on Monday, December 5, 2016 from 6:30pm to 8:00 pm at the Faculty Lounge, Main Building at UPEI.
Co-authored by Don Jardine and Dr. Adam Fenech and published by the Climate Research Lab at UPEI, this third edition of the weather trivia calendar is filled with 365 new stories about real local weather events from across the Island over the past 250 years and their impact on Islanders’ everyday lives.
PEI history comes to life in this third edition of PEI’s weather trivia calendar of all new 365 stories about Prince Edward Island weather and its impact on Islanders’ everyday life. This calendar brings stories from North Cape to East Point, West Point to Murray Head – and all points in-between over the past 250 years.

The December Island Studies Lecture is Tuesday, December 6, at 7 pm in the SDU Main Building Faculty Lounge on the UPEI campus, featuring Dr. Sharon Myers speaking about “The Murderous Mother and the Meanings of Minnie McGee."
In July 1912, 36-year-old Minnie McGee (nee Mary Cassidy, 1875-1953) of St. Mary’s Road, was tried and sentenced to hang for the murder of her son. While charged only in the death of 10-year-old John, evidence suggests she had killed all six of her children during the same week that spring. More than 130 people in the larger Georgetown area signed a petition for clemency, requesting the federal Minister of Justice to “commute her sentence on a plea of insanity.” The commutation was awarded and McGee would spend the rest of her life in a variety of provincial and federal institutions. Dr. Myers’ research follows McGee’s life in and out of institutions, showing a pattern of occurrences in McGee’s “criminal” life where the state chose to discipline and punish with far lighter touch than might be expected.

UPEI and Student Affairs are offering Mental Health First Aid training to all students, faculty and staff. All fees and related costs are paid for by UPEI.
The MHFA Canada program aims to improve mental health literacy, and provide the skills and knowledge to help people better manage potential or developing mental health problems in themselves, a family member, a friend or colleague.
The upcoming session will be held on Wednesday, December 14 from 9:00 am-4:00 pm and Thursday, December 15 from 9:00 am-4:00 pm (one hour for lunch each day, lunch is
not provided). Snacks and refreshments will be served. Attendance on both days is mandatory for completion of the training.

The Physics department identified surplus equipment before its recent move to the SSDE building and what is left will be available in Duffy Science Centre 309 on Monday, December 5 from 2:30 to 4 pm. A general "for use at UPEI" pickup took place October, but this opportunity is for anyone who might have any use for these items (i.e. home use, disassembly for parts, etc.) as what is remaining will be disposed of. Examples of items include old electronics equipment such as calorimeter equipment, analog meters, glassware; metal weights; metal stands; scales, graph paper, electronic components; and some office items. Contact Lisa Steele (ldsteele@upei.ca) if you have questions.
At the Chaplaincy Centre, thoughts are with the students during exam time, their success, and yes, of course, the chili dinner. On the first two days of exams -- Wednesday and Thursday, December 7 and 8, between 11:30 am–1:30 pm -- a chili dinner is served at the Chaplaincy Centre, free for the students. About 300 students show up each day with smiles and conversation on this busy week. We are looking for faculty and staff to help out and provide encouragement for students on their exams. Relax, play a game, colour, get crafty, read some poetry, get festive. It all starts on December 1st and continues until December 17th. And, as a special treat, Chartwells and the Robertson Library are co-sponsoring two afternoons of cupcakes and cookies, coffee and hot chocolate on Saturday December 3 and Saturday December 10 (2 pm start). Good for the belly, good for the soul!

Calling all singers! The UPEI Multicultural Choir and Song Circle will be meeting Tuesday, November 29th, from 4:30 to 5:30pm in the Robertson Library Building, in the basement, room 103. This area is also accessible by an elevator, if needed (call Hailey – see below).
The multicultural choir is in its 6th year, and is a non-audition, open, free and fun activity which brings people from campus and the community together, sharing songs from cultures all around the world!

There are some additional plumbing repairs needed in the washrooms of Don and Marion McDougall Hall, south end of the building only. In order to do these repairs we need to shutdown the domestic hot and cold water for the south end of the building (this would be the former Marion Hall portion of the building) on Friday, December 2nd beginning at 5:00 pm. The shutdown is expected to last approximately 2 hours. The washrooms near the elevator on the 2nd and 3rd floor are not effected and will remain open.
