Dr. Edward Chung, UPEI's Asian Studies Coordinator and Korean Studies Project Director, invites you to the 4th Annual Lunch Event in celebration of the traditional Chinese and Korean New Year's Day.

Come socialize with our Asian/Korean Studies students, instructors, staff and supporters. We will also offer a brief information session on UPEI’s new Korean Studies Program, including: student scholarship, TAship, workshop, and international opportunity.

You are most welcome to join us on Thursday, February 15, 12:00—1:00 pm in SDU Main Building Faculty Lounge (main floor, rm. 201) for a healthy East Asian lunch and soft drinks. Students who have taken an Asian Studies course last year, are enrolled this year, or will take one this summer or fall are welcome to attend!

Beginning the week of February 12, ITSS will be rolling out the new ESET Endpoint Security/Antivirus application to the remainder of campus workstations (if you see a “K” in your system tray then you are still using the Kaspersky Antivirus application).

ITSS will conduct this rollout in a phased approach, and contact each of area beforehand to offer more details and technical support (the install itself is quite seamless and happens automatically when you log into your workstation).

Ebtehal El-Ghezlani, PhD Candidate, will deliver a presentation entitled "Novel Cationic Cyclopentadienyliron Based Chromene Complexes tuning the properties" on Wednesday, February 14 at 12:30 pm in room 212 of the Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre.

The UPEI Athletics department would like to thank staff and faculty for the incredible support these past two weekends. They have made the Bell Lets Talk, shoot for cure and Pink in the rink nights and events to remember. And because of that, for the first time ever we would like to offer, for the first time ever free ticket s to all staff and faculty to see the UPEI men's hockey team play this Saturday at The Eastlink centre in their last regular season game.
 
The event starts at 5:30 with a family skate along with the Panther and Islanders players. Helmets must be worn, followed by the UPEI Panthers vs St Fx.
 
 To reserve tickets contact Leigh Read at lread@upei.ca and be there to cheer your Panthers on to the playoffs.

The Summer course schedule is now available in the myUPEI Course Catalogue under the term "2018S". The 2018 Fall and 2019 Winter course schedules / registration dates will be available in the coming weeks. A further notice will be posted when more information is available.

For the 2018S (Summer term), registration for all students opens on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at 12:00 am Atlantic Time

Please note that:

  1. outstanding account balances may impact a student's ability to register. Please check well before registration to ensure all balances are paid.
  2. effective immediately, NO DEPOSIT will be required prior to registration for current returning students.
  3. any questions regarding registration may be directed to registrar@upei.ca.

Power Shutdown

There will be a power shutdown for the Atlantic Veterinary College. This shutdown is necessary to complete an electrical switchgear upgrade for the AVC. The shutdown is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Feb 10, 2018 beginning at 5:00pm and is expected to take 10 - 12 hours to complete. This will result in the normal power being shutdown for the entire building. Emergency power will not be affected.

In order to prepare for this shutdown, Facilities Management are required to complete some preliminary electrical work, which will result in a power shutdown for the heat pumps, the central elevator and medical air. This shutdown is scheduled to take place on Sunday, February 4, 2018 beginning at 6:00am and is expected to take 3 - 4 hours to complete.

UPEI Information Technology Systems and Services (ITSS) will perform computer upgrades and maintenance in the AVC 218S computer lab from Friday, February 9 to Monday, February 12, 2018. The space will not be available for use during that period, and the staff at ITSS thanks you for your patience and understanding.

The Faculty of Science wishes to announce Evan MacDonald, masters student, will be defending his thesis entitled "Are Vegetation Index Maps Derived From Suas-mounted Multispectral Sensors An Accurate Predictor Of Yield In Potatoes?"

Ethics protocols that involve ‘more than minimal risk’ must be reviewed by the full UPEI Research Ethics Board. The next deadline for submitting these protocols is Monday March 5 2018. They will be reviewed at the March meeting. Protocols involving ‘more than minimal risk’ that are received after March 5 will be reviewed at the April 2018 meeting.

Other ethics protocol submissions, including new applications that do not involve ‘more than minimal risk’, renewals, and amendments may be submitted at any time. They will be sent for delegated review as soon as all necessary forms are received.

The planning committee for UPEI Mental Health Week 2018 has been busy putting together a week of events and information sessions to bring our community together to share, learn, and celebrate our mental health and wellness; to help end the stigma and encourage conversation on this important topic.

If you would like to volunteer 1 - 3 hours of your time staffing an information booth and/or greeting people at sessions, we would love to have you. If interested, please provide your contact information and we will be in touch with you.

The UPEI Department of Music Recital Series 2017-2018 presents Raga Music featuring Rod Thomas Squance, on the marimba (a Central American xylophone), and Abbas Janmohamed, on the tabla (a pair of sophisticated traditional drums from India) will play music inspired by the North Indian, Hindustani tradition of classical raga, but with an innovative and multicultural treatment. Raga is a centuries-old form of classical music originating in India, with a combination of composed and improvised elements and very close communication and interaction between the performers.

Together, Rod and Abbas will present North Indian raga music with a fresh, exciting and highly entertaining approach that still preserves the integrity and authenticity of the tradition.

The recital will take place on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 7:30 PM in the Dr. Steel Recital Hall, UPEI Campus.

All are welcome to attend Mary MacPhee's PhD Defense presentation, "The Experience of Non-Francophone Parents with Children in Minority-language Schools in Prince Edward Island: A Mixed Method Study".

The examining committee includes Dr. Jules Rocque (University of St.Boniface), Dr. Scott Lee (UPEI), Dr. Miles Turnbull (Bishops University), Dr. Marianne Cormier (University of Moncton)​, and Jane Preston (UPEI)​. The defense will be chaired by Dr. ​Tess Miller.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first aid. ASIST teaches participants to recognize when someone may have thoughts of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. UPEI will be offering it's next ASIST Workshop on Thursday/Friday March 8th & 9th. This workshop has a limited capacity of 15, and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. All other interested contacts will be included for future ASIST sessions. Please email kjlawlor@upei.ca to request to join the workshop.

With the increase in quality and quantity of cognitive sciences research over the last few years, what of it can be usefully applied to teaching? This workshop aims to summarize that research on memory and learning and provide instructors with tips for integration into their teaching. Offered by the E-Learning Office, this workshop is available on either February 14th from 10:00 to 11:00 am or on March 13th from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. Location is the Robertson Library, Room 265. “Getting a Nice Glow on at Research on Tap: Luminescent
Sensors and the Fluorescence of Everyday Things.”

Research on Tap returns Thursday, February 8, at 6:30 pm, in The Wave, the UPEI campus pub in the W.A. Murphy Student Centre. Dr. Brian Wagner, professor of chemistry, will lead a discussion on luminescent sensors and the fluorescence of everyday things.
