Gowns and Hoods

Gowns and hoods—also known as academic dress, costume or regalia—must be worn at Convocation ceremonies. However, due to the pandemic, we are unable to hold traditional Convocation ceremonies for the Class of 2020 and the Class of 2021 and instead are holding In-Person Convocation Celebrations for each faculty. There is no requirement or expectation that graduates wear academic dress at these celebrations as they are not "ceremonies."

Gown and Hood Rental

However, if students want to rent a gown and hood for photos either at home (anywhere in Canada) or on campus, UPEI's supplier, GradCo, has developed a dedicated UPEI order form: https://www.gradco.ca/2021-upei and will ship the gown and hood directly to the graduate's home address (only available in Canada).

How to Wear UPEI Academic Dress

At UPEI, the ceremonial hoods worn with the black gown are colour-coded to identify the student's field of study (see "Hood Colours" below). Hoods are pinned on the front of the gown, so that the colour of the hood shows on the front and over the shoulders. The hood hangs over the back. Ceremonial gowns have zippers and are meant to be zipped up. Graduates receiving a diploma and/or certificate wear a gown only. Graduates receiving a Bachelor's degree wear a gown and hood, and PhD recipients wear a PhD gown, hood, and hat.
