David Shephard has been on faculty at UPEI since receiving his Bachelor of Music degree here in 1975. He teaches Applied Percussion, Percussion Techniques, and Jazz Techniques, and directs the UPEI Percussion Ensemble and the Jazz Ensemble.
He has been the percussionist with the Charlottetown Festival Orchestra since 1991, was percussionist for various theatre shows at the MacKenzie Theatre from 1983 to 1990, and was principal percussionist with the Prince Edward Island Symphony Orchestra for over 40 years, starting in 1971. In the summer of 1991, he was percussionist for the Anne of Green Gables–The Musical tour of Japan, which included a recording for Japanese television. He has played with various jazz and rock groups as a set player, and performed as timpanist or mallet player in many classical concerts in both solo and ensemble capacities.
Prof. Shephard has performed and recorded as percussionist with the Northumberland Brass at the Indian River Festival for All the Best (CBC Halifax). Other recordings include the stage production of Johnny Belinda for Saturday Afternoon at the Opera, Sounds of the Island for CBCT Charlottetown, and with various local artists as a session player.
He was the percussion instructor at Mount Allison University for many years, was an instrumental school music teacher on PEI for six years, and has also done some teaching at the University of Moncton.
