IDW Brown Bag Lunch Series – “UPEI Faculty Makes a Difference”

Join Dr. Carolyn Peach Brown and Dr. Donald Wagner for two presentations as a part of UPEI's International Development Week on Monday, February 2 at 11:30 am in the Faculty Lounge, SDU Main Building. Dr. Brown's presentation, entitled “Forests, People and Development in Cameroon,” will begin a discussion about the role of local institutions and community forest management in the Congo Basin forest of Cameroon. Dr. Wagner's presentation, entitled “Microfinance in Uganda and South Africa,” will explore how microfinance is used as an economic development tool in Uganda and South Africa. The presentation will look both at some of the successes and challenges. Light refreshments will be provided, and a door prize will be given out to one lucky attendee!

Join UPEI students Jayoda Tennekone and Rhyanne Beatty for two presentations as a part of UPEI's International Development Week on Tuesday, February 10 at 11:30 am in the Robertson Library's PIT. *This presentation has been rescheduled from Tuesday, February 3. Jayoda will give a presentation entitled "Improving International Relations in Your Own Community: Learning From the Diverse People Around you," followed by Rhyanne's presentation entitled “How to make a difference through the study of languages.” Light refreshments will be provided, and a door prize will be given out to one lucky attendee!

IDW Brown Bag Lunch Series – “AVC Makes a Difference”

Join Dr. Shauna Richards and Dr. Crawford Revie for two presentations as a part of UPEI's International Development Week on Wednesday, February 4 at 11:30 am in the Faculty Lounge, SDU Main Building. Dr. Richards presentation, entitled “Improving Dairy Farming in Kenya,” will focus on her research on cow nutrition. She hopes to improve the production of smallholder dairy farms and provide a possible pathway out of poverty for farmers and their families. Additional research goals are to improve cow welfare which will also lead to improved dairy production and better living conditions for cows. Dr. Revie's presentation is entitled “What relevance does Big Data have to health care in developing economies?” It seems 2014 was the year of Big Data with an increasing appreciation that the scale and shape of our digital landscapes are rapidly changing. However, in many low middle income country settings, the availability of data to address key questions and enhance capacity to bring about change is limited at best. Some of these data gap issues will be explored in a new project on the use of smart-phone and Cloud technologies to improve disease diagnosis, surveillance and treatment of cattle in rural Ethiopia. IDW Brown Bag Lunch Series – "Opportunities to be a Global Village"

Join the Atlantic Council for International Cooperation (ACIC) on Thursday, February 5 at 12:00 pm in The Wave for a presenation entitled "Opportunities to be a Global Village," as a part of UPEI's International Development Week. Explore the role of international development and international development organizations within Canadian contexts and how students can become involved locally. There will be a Fair Trade Marketplace, food and presentations by the Atlantic Council for International Cooperation (ACIC) PEI member organizations. Presenting organizations include: Campbell Webster Foundation, Cooper Institute, CUSO International, CUPE, Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan, Farmers Helping Farmers, Mikinduri Children of Hope, and WUSC. Light refreshments will be provided, and a door prize will be given out to one lucky attendee!

IDW Brown Bag Lunch Series – “Restoring Family Links”

Join the Canadian Red Cross on Friday, February 6 at 11:30 am in the Faculty Lounge of SDU Main Building for a presentation entitled “Restoring Family Links,” as a part of UPEI's International Development Week. The chaos and confusion that accompany war and natural disasters can separate families when they need each other most. The Canadian Red Cross Restoring Family Links program helps people in Canada re-establish contact with immediate family members after separation due to armed conflict, natural disaster, migration and other humanitarian crises. Light refreshments will be provided.

Games and Karaoke Night

Join the Society for International Students and the UPEI Iranian Society for a Games and Karaoke Night, on Wednesday February 4 from 6:30-8:30 pm, in the Campus Life Lounge in the W.A. Murphy Student Centre (second floor above Bookstore), as a part of UPEI's International Development Week. Play board games and sing karaoke, all while meeting and making friends from all around the world! Enjoy an evening of free music, games, and snacks. This event will be combined with the International Coffee House , rescheduled from Tuesday, February 3.

Desserts and a Difference

* Due to weather conditions and the closure of the University, this event has been postponed until further notice. Join us for an afternoon of “Desserts and a Difference”, on Thursday, February 6 from 2:30-4:00 pm featuring a keynote address from Dr. Timothy Goddard, entitled “The quest for Buen Vivir: For whom are we making a difference, and why?” Drawing on contemporary development theory and examples from some of the international initiatives in which he has been involved, Dr. Goddard will challenge some of our taken-for-granted notions regarding the nature of development. He will reflect on the idea of international development and examine some of the ways in which local communities can assume agency for their own future. Presentation to be followed by a dessert reception, featuring instrumental music from UPEI International student, Jacob Liu, and door prize draw! Reserve your tickets today by visiting upei.ca/idw.
