Artificial Intelligence in Health Care

The University of Prince Edward Island and the University of Toronto's Temerty Centre for AI Research and Education in Medicine (T-CAIREM) are offering a one-week program for 30 high school students in August 2026 in PEI. The program will be delivered in-person to high school students (grades 10-12) with interests in health care, AI policy, or computer science.

Students will gain an understanding and receive hands-on experience developing AI models. The program has been designed for students interested in careers in medicine and those who want to develop AI tools in health care.

The one-week program consists of:

  • Seminars and presentations from local and national AI experts
  • Social/breakout activities with other students
  • Group project with students (5 groups of 6 people)
  • Final presentations with esteemed faculty from UPEI

Students who finish the program will receive a Certificate of Completion.

By the end of the program, participants will be able to:

  • Explain fundamental concepts of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML)
  • Write basic code in Python to implement simple ML tasks
  • Describe and apply the steps involved in developing a machine learning model
  • Analyze real-world applications of AI in health-care settings
  • Critically evaluate the broader implications of AI in health care, including sustainability and One Health perspectives
  • Explore and reflect on potential career pathways at the intersection of health care, technology, and innovation

Application details

Students who have completed grade 9 as of June 2026 and are entering grade 10 in September are also eligible to apply.

The program is open to all high school students with interests in health care, AI policy, or computer science. Although coding skills are not required, they can be helpful before the program, as we will teach students how to develop machine learning models.

Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, so we recommend you apply early!

Successful applicants will be invited to register and pay the program fee after acceptance.

Program cost

$450 for PEI residents; $600 non-residents (+tax).
