Based on the true story of an 84 year-old Kenyan villager, an ex Mau Mau freedom fighter, who goes to school for the first time to get the education he was denied. Maruge's flashbacks to the 50's terrible fight for freedom from the British rulers will echo in your consciousness. Light refreshments will be provided.

Join Laura Simms, an award-winning performer, writer, and educator for an evening of storytelling. Laura received the Brimstone Award for Engaged Storytelling, CHOICE award for best story collection, and Sesame Street’s SUNNY DAYS award for work with children worldwide. Laura is the mother of Ishmael Beah, former child solider in Sierra Leone, and author of A Long Way Gone, an international best-seller. Storytelling can be the cause of wars or the impetus for liberation and healing communication. Laura will explore how the alchemy of engagement, bringing story to life between people in the present, repairs the devestating dissconnection at the root of conflicts, intolerance, isolation, and unnecessary suffering today. Through a rivetting sharing of stories, personal and ancient, Laura will bring us into a deeper understanding of the power of story. A silent auction, book signing and reception with refreshments will follow. Tickets are $20 and include admission, light refreshments and one drink ticket per person, redeemable for your choice of alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverage. UPEI student group, the Mindfulness Club, will host an introductory session on transcendental mediation on Friday, January 24 at 7:30 pm in Main Building’s Faculty Lounge. The session will be led by Peter Cameron, certified transcendental mediation instructor with over 40 years of teaching experience in Atlantic Canada. Cameron will present some of the research that verifies the many subjective benefits of practicing this meditation technique, including improved quality of life and grade point average through stress reduction

The Faculty of the UPEI Department of Music will take centre stage in their annual performance on Saturday, February 8 at 7:30 PM in the Dr. Steel Recital Hall. Faculty members featured that night include Karem J. Simon, accompanied by pianist Frances McBurnie, performing Alessandro Marcello’s Concerto for clarinet and Gregory B. Irvine accompanied by Frances Gray, piano in a performance of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s Sinfonia in F for tuba. Percussion instructor David Shephard will feature the marimba on A Little Prayer composed by Evelyn Glennie and pianist Frances Gray will perform East Coast Suite composed by island native Heather Taves. On Tuesday, January 28, UPEI’s Dr. Colleen MacQuarrie and her research team at the University will present new research findings on abortion access for PEI women. The presentation will take place on Tuesday, January 28 in Don and Marion McDougall Hall, Room 242 from 6:30-8:00 pm. The focus of the presentation will be on understanding the impacts of PEI’s abortion policies on women’s lives. Jane Ledwell, Executive Director of the Advisory Council on the Status of Women, will moderate the event. SPEAKER: Alyssa Grunwald, Biomedical Sciences TITLE: Natural products and microbial diversity of Frobisher Bay

The UPEI Music Department is pleased to present the Debut Atlantic tour of Diomira on Tuesday, February 11 at 7:30 pm in the Dr. Steel Recital Hall at UPEI. Formed in April 2011, the trio's critically acclaimed literary and globally-inspired program was immediately recorded by the CBC and has since enjoyed repeated nationwide broadcast, garnering audience support for a style that balances sublime music-making with virtuosity. As part of their Debut Atlantic tour, Diomira will engage local young creators and composers to write music for the ensemble. These works will then be performed in concert, bringing a unique element to each community performance.
