Three Minute Thesis! (part two)

Cheer on your friends as they try to cram years of learning into three minutes! When: Tuesday, March 18, 7 pm, and Tuesday, March 25, 7 pm Where: The Wave What: The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is a skills development activity which challenges thesis-based graduate students to explain their research project to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes. First place wins $200 and a trip to Dalhousie University to compete in the regional 3MT. Second place wins $100. Third place wins $50. UPEI has 17 graduate students competing this year, so we've spread the competition over two evenings: Tuesday, March 18 and Tuesday, March 25. Both events begin at 7. The winner will be announced at the end of competition on the evening of the 25th. Students: want to brush up on your presenting techniques before the competition? Dr. Karen Samis, assistant professor of Biology, will lead a crash course on Friday, March 14 at 2 pm in room 104 of the K.C. Irving Chemistry Centre.

RBC Guest Speaker: Dawn Desjardins

On Thursday, March 13 the UPEI Executive MBA program will be hosting special guest speaker, Dawn Desjardins, Assistant Chief Economist with RBC, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am in Bill and Denise Andrew Hall, Room 142. Dawn Desjardins joined the RBC Economics team in January 2006 as a senior economist. She is responsible for the macroeconomic and interest rate forecasts for Canada and the U.S. Previously, Dawn worked as a reporter for Bloomberg Financial News in Toronto covering the Canadian bond and currency markets and was the Canadian bond market strategist for a major U.S. bank for ten years. Science Seminar Presentation

Dr. Martin Mkandawire, Department of Chemistry, Cape Breton University will present a seminar on Wednesday, March 12 at 12:30 pm entitled “From Academic Research to Commercially Viable Technology: New Perspective in Mine Water Research.” The seminar will be held in the Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre, Lecture Theatre Room 212. All are welcome to attend.

In this seminar, participants will learn ways to prepare, inspect, report and follow up on workplace hazards. The workshop uses group and individual activities involving common hazard scenarios and sample forms to guide you along in your next workplace safety inspection. Please note that there is a second session on April 16, at the same location, from 1:30-3:30 pm, that will cover the same material.
