After a busy weekend at home, the Panther varsity teams are packing for road trips across the Maritimes. There’s just one game on the home schedule this week, as UPEI women’s hockey gears up Wednesday, January 29, for a game against the Université de Moncton. The puck drops at 7 pm in MacLauchlan Arena.

“We are looking forward to hosting U de M tomorrow evening,” said coach Bruce Donaldson. “The Moncton team has been playing very well and will be coming in looking for two big points. We need to start by scoring a goal and building from there. The team will be ready, having lost our last two games. We need to be hungry.”

Wednesday’s game is also part of UPEI’s annual Bell Let’s Talk Day. Admission is by donation, with all proceeds going to the PEI division of the Canadian Mental Health Association.

Mental illness affects people of all ages and from all walks of life. According to the Mental Health Commission of Canada, one in five people in Canada will experience a mental health issue or illness in any given year. Over the past nine years, Canadians and people around the globe have joined in the world’s largest conversation around mental health on Bell Let’s Talk Day to reduce the stigma around mental health issues. In a recent survey conducted by Nielsen Consumer Insights in 2019, 84 per cent of Canadians now say they are comfortable speaking with others about mental health, compared to only 42 per cent in 2012.

However, there is still work to be done to ensure all Canadians have access to the mental health support they need. This year on Bell Let’s Talk Day, Canadians are encouraged to share the actions, large and small, that they are taking to improve the lives of people living with mental health issues. That’s why UPEI is joining in on the 10th annual Bell Let’s Talk Day—to help create positive change.
