Senior Recital

Join the Department of Music for a senior recital on March 24, 2013 with Echo Lau on piano. The program will include Chopin's Sonata no.3 in B minor, Debussy's L’isle Joyeuse, and Ravel's Concerto in G, accompanied by Dr. Frances Gray. Echo has represented PEI in the National Music Festival and has twice been awarded the Rose Bowl at the PEI Kiwanis Music Festival. The recital is free and all are welcome to attend.

AVC Seminar Series Presentation

The next seminar in the series being presented at AVC for 2012-2013 will be held on Thursday, February 21, 2013 at 3:00 pm in room 287N, McCain Foundation Learning Commons. Dr. David Sims, Professor of Microscopic Anatomy in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, AVC will present "AVC’s Amazing Quality Assurance Program". This presentation will overview the history of the Quality Assurance Program, introduce its people, demonstrate virtual microscopy, and discuss the implications of operating an entrepreneurial program within an academic setting. Everyone is welcome!

Animal Determinants of Emerging Disease Seminar

Join Dr. Patrick Leighton for a seminar entitled "Parasite co-invasion and the emergence of Lyme disease in Canada," on Tuesday, February 19 at 2:00 pm in AVC room 343N. Dr Leighton is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Montreal. He obtained a PhD in wildlife ecology at McGill University before moving into the area of disease ecology and epidemiology during postdocs at University of Montreal and University of Toronto. His research focuses on the effects of climate and landscape structure on the spread of parasites and pathogens, and in particular the recent emergence of Lyme disease in Canada, which he will talk about today. As a professor, he has been a key player in the creation of a new masters-level program in Veterinary Public Health, offered at the University of Montreal since summer 2012. Everyone welcome!

Research on Tap

At the next Research on Tap, raise a toast to alcohol. Dr. Richard Kurial, Professor History at UPEI, will lead a discussion entitled From whence all good things flow: how alcohol built the West. The event begins at 7:00 pm, Tuesday, March 5, at The Pourhouse (above The Old Triangle Irish Alehouse in Charlottetown). “I don’t deny the social price that many pay for alcohol,” said Dr. Kurial, “but it is minor compared to the economic, social, and technological benefits we have enjoyed because of drinking.” Dr. Kurial argues alcohol provided the creativity and willingness to take risks that were required to innovate and build the world we live in today.
