Physician Lead - Social Accountability - Faculty of Medicine
$185.00 – 267.00 per hour (Salary and compensation for this position is in accordance with the approved Faculty of Medicine Remuneration Guidelines and consistent with the Health PEI Physician Services Agreement (PSA) remuneration. Final compensation will vary by specialty.)

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) invites applications for the position of Physician Lead, Social Accountability. Reporting to the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and working in close collaboration with the Senior Advisor of Medical Education, program leadership, faculty, clinical leaders, and community partners, the Physician Lead, Social Accountability provides strategic leadership to advance the Faculty’s commitments to social accountability, equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, reconciliation, anti-racism, and community engagement across all mission areas of education, research, clinical partnership, and service.
This cross-cutting role influences all aspects of the Faculty of Medicine and works collaboratively to ensure that the Faculty of Medicine responds to the priority health needs of Prince Edward Island and contributes meaningfully to health equity.
The Physician Lead will lead the development, implementation, and continuous evaluation of initiatives that foster inclusive learning environments, community-engaged medical education, and the development of policies and practices that reflect principles of social justice, anti-racism, accessibility, reconciliation, and community partnership. Particular attention will be given to supporting relationships with underserved, rural, Indigenous, newcomer, and equity-deserving communities on PEI.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide strategic leadership for social accountability initiatives across the Faculty of Medicine, including equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, reconciliation, anti-racism, and community engagement
Support the integration of social accountability principles into undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, faculty development, research initiatives, and clinical partnerships
Foster meaningful partnerships with community organizations, healthcare providers, government agencies, and equity-deserving communities to ensure responsiveness to community health priorities
Support UGME and PGME accreditation processes (CACMS and CanERA) by ensuring integration of social accountability and equity principles within institutional and program submissions
Advise Faculty leadership on policies, practices, and organizational culture that promote inclusive, respectful, and equitable academic and clinical environments
Support accreditation readiness by ensuring alignment with relevant standards related to social accountability, learning environment, and community engagement
Promote scholarship, innovation, and knowledge mobilization related to social accountability and health equity in medical education
Undertake other duties as assigned by the Dean or their delegates
Liaison & CollaborationThe Physician Lead collaborates broadly across the University, healthcare partners, and community organizations to advance socially accountable medical education and strengthen community-engaged partnerships
Committee Responsibilities
Participates in Faculty of Medicine and University governance structures and other committees as appropriate to the portfolio and as determined by the Dean of medicine
QUALIFICATIONS:
A medical degree with certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC), the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC), or equivalent
Member in good standing of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of PEI.
Membership in the Medical Society of Prince Edward Island (MSPEI)
Appointees must maintain an active appointment to the medical staff of Health PEI (HPEI)
Demonstrated leadership experience in medical education, health systems, community engagement, or related fields. Preference will be given to demonstrated experience and/or training in medical education, leadership, and quality improvement. Established expertise or significant experience in social accountability, equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, reconciliation, anti-racism, or related areas in academic, clinical, or community contexts
Ability to establish and maintain multi-sectoral relationships (i.e., across universities, hospitals, provincial Ministries and other stakeholders)
Strong experience working collaboratively with diverse communities and stakeholders
Excellent leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills.
Demonstrated commitment to advancing health equity and socially accountable medical education
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Understanding of CACMS and CanERA accreditation standards related to social accountability
