The Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), invites applications for a full-time term faculty position as Assistant Dean, Clinical & Professional Program.  This position will direct the College’s professional training and student career counselling program, as well as oversee the veterinary teaching hospital under a realigned practice management model.

Reporting to the Dean, the successful candidate will support the AVC curricular focus on professional skills development in areas of communications, cultural competency, financial literacy and career and practice management, among other objectives. The successful candidate will align with the Associate Dean, Academic and Student Affairs to ensure that learning outcomes are achieved within the Professional and Clinical Program and will provide oversight to the veterinary teaching hospital (VTH) as a primary foundational learning environment for Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) students. 

In addition to teaching and veterinary teaching hospital oversight responsibilities, service obligations for this position will include: career counselling to students (job placement advising, resumes, contract review, etc.); assisting the Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs in advising third-year students on elective course selection and rotation planning; and providing mentorship and support to clinical DVM students during fourth-year rotations.  Veterinary oversight of VTH activities will be in collaboration with the VTH administration/management team (VTH Operations, Client Liaison, IT, and HR/Finance).

The successful candidate will:

  • Have a DVM or equivalent degree
  • Have a minimum of 3 years’ experience leading a complex, multi-faceted organization
  • Leadership success within an academic setting, a healthcare environment and/or a unionized workplace would be assets, as would an advanced degree related to management
  • Possess well developed skills of collaboration, collegiality and relationship building, and communication
  • Be eligible for licensure with the Prince Edward Island Veterinary Medical Association

The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Full-time faculty receive fringe benefits with benefit details provided at the time of offer in accordance with the Collective Agreement.  This appointment is subject to budgetary approval.

The AVC is located on the campus of UPEI in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island (PEI).  UPEI is committed to teaching, research and service.  The college is fully accredited by the CVMA and AVMA, is recognized by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, and delivers DVM, MVSc, MSc and PhD programs. The AVC is the regional veterinary college for Atlantic Canada and is the main veterinary referral centre in Atlantic Canada. There are ~272 DVM students, ~70 graduate students, 70 full-time faculty, and a professional and technical team of ~220 dedicated individuals.
