ARTS 1050 AI and Society examines artificial intelligence within a longer history of tools and their relationship to how humans live, labour, and learn. When answers arrive faster than questions can be formed, the course asks how individuals remain intentional participants in their own learning and decision-making. Rather than offering technical instruction in AI tools, the course approaches AI as a socio-technical system that shapes how questions are framed, how evidence is evaluated, and how responsibility is distributed across institutions, infrastructures, and everyday practice. Students develop literacies for interpreting what contemporary AI systems do and do not do, including how they rely on data and prediction, and how their outputs introduce new ethical, social, and environmental challenges. Delivered in a large-cohort asynchronous format, the course emphasizes careful questioning, critical interpretation, and responsible engagement with emerging technologies across disciplines.

This notice seeks to hire up to two Student Teaching Assistants to support delivery of the course across both summer semesters, working closely with the instructor to manage course logistics, communications, and student support at scale.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate administrative aspects of the course for a large asynchronous cohort, ensuring smooth operation of weekly activities, announcements, and assignment timelines
  • Monitor and manage the course Moodle environment, including discussion forums, assignment submissions, and general student communications
  • Respond promptly to routine student inquiries regarding course expectations, deadlines, and navigation of course materials
  • Support the rollout, tracking, and organization of staged assignments and multimedia submissions across the semester
  • Assist with grading workflows, record management, and distribution of instructor feedback according to established rubrics and timelines
  • Identify and flag emerging issues or patterns in student engagement, participation, or technical challenges for the instructor
  • Familiarize oneself with the Digital Education Council (2025) AI Literacy Framework and related resources, modelling intentional curiosity across the dimensions of Understanding AI and Data; Critical Thinking and Judgement; Ethical and Responsible Use; and Human-Centricity, Emotional Intelligence, and Creativity
  • As needed, host optional virtual drop-in question sessions and/or schedule one-on-one meetings with students to clarify course expectations and support progress on staged assignments
  • Maintain reasonable flexibility to attend periodic coordination meetings with the instructor to review course progress, troubleshoot challenges, and adjust administrative processes as needed

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be a current UPEI student
  • Demonstrate exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail, particularly in projects with multiple components, deadlines, and logistical coordination
  • Clear and professional written communication skills suited to corresponding with large groups of students in an online learning environment
  • Aptitude for managing communications and administrative workflows in large-cohort or asynchronous courses
  • Ability to anticipate challenges, troubleshoot issues, and implement practical solutions independently
  • Experience working with learning management systems (e.g., Moodle) or comparable digital platforms
  • Demonstrate reliability, professionalism, and time-management skills in fast-paced academic settings
  • Interest in the social, ethical, and cultural questions surrounding artificial intelligence and other transformative technologies
  • Practical experience using AI tools, including large language models, and familiarity with other common forms of AI-enabled systems such as generative image tools, transcription or summarization tools, recommendation systems, or AI-assisted research tools

Assets:

  • Familiarity with Inquiry-Based Learning or project-based learning environments
  • Academic experience engaging human-centred, interdisciplinary, or arts-informed perspectives on science and technology
