The Faculty of Education at the University of Prince Edward Island has openings for sessional instructors to teach the following courses in fall 2026. The offering of each course listed is conditional pending final enrolment numbers. All positions are subject to final budgetary and administrative approval.

Please note: the courses offered below will be taught in person, unless otherwise specified as an online course.


ED-4336-3  Developing Learning and Play in the Early Years (Ages 0-8) – (taught in French)

Current theoretical and conceptual frameworks in the field of early years education and how they inform current approaches to the children’s learning from age 0-8 will be examined.
Participants will study play and its major role in young children’s learning, major influences affecting learning and play, methods of observing and studying play, and practical approaches for supporting and facilitating children’s learning in early childhood settings and in grades K-2.  Participants in current BEd programmes and educators from early years settings will develop projects combining their observations in early years settings with practical curriculum activities.

This course is taught in French to primary/elementary students in our Bachelor of Education (français langue seconde) program.  

The course will be taught Mondays and Wednesdays, 12:30pm to 3:15pm from September 2 to October 14, 2026.


ED-4961-1  Preparation for the Teaching Profession I

Through a series of seminars, students will prepare for the role for a professional career. Topics will include teaching philosophy, classroom management and organization, teacher resilience, legal and ethical responsibilities, preparation for in-school experience, teacher certification, resume writing, questioning and presentation skills.

This course is taught to students in the primary/elementary cohort of our Bachelor of Education program.  

The course is offered Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30am to 11:15am, from September 2 to October 14, 2026.


ED-4962-99 Practicum 1 – (one French section)

Students will complete a 9 week teaching placement in a PEI public school with the guidance of a practicum Faculty advisor and a host mentor teacher. Students undertake planning and teaching effective lessons, develop personal classroom management strategies, and use strategies from methods courses to facilitate and assess student learning. Feedback from the host mentor teacher and faculty advisor will inform self- assessment and personal professional growth.

This course is offered in French and primarily involves in-school supervision of up to ten pre-service teachers as well as 3-4 meetings with groups of students during the semester.

This course is offered from October 15 to December 18, 2026.

Note: The public school system requires that all instructors possess a clean and valid criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening.


ED-6290-98  Program Evaluation

In this course, students study the various concepts and issues in program evaluation. Students examine literature on program evaluation to understand the methods and theory required to conduct an evaluation.

This course is offered to students in our Master of Education in Leadership in Learning program, September 8 to December 18, 2026.  


Qualifications:

Ideal candidates will have a Master of Education or equivalent degree.  Successful candidates will normally have school-based experience in a Canadian public K-12 system.  For applicants without school-based experience, teaching in other contexts relevant and appropriate to the position will be considered. Applicants should have experience in teaching, research or practice related to the course content.

Instructors teaching online courses are expected to have sufficient internet bandwidth and technology available to deliver the course on-line.

Qualified candidates with seniority on the UPEI Faculty of Education’s Sessional Roster and the Faculty’s full-time and term contract faculty members will be given priority.
