UPEI Safety Week

The Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee is pleased to present the second annual UPEI Safety Week, September 24–27, 2018. The week-long schedule of educational and fun activities is designed to create awareness and encourage all faculty, staff, and students to develop and maintain a safe study and work environment year-round.

We encourage everyone to participate and there will be lots of opportunities to win prizes!

Monday, September 24

UPEI's New Building Emergency Plan
9:00–10:00 am, MCDH 329
Presented by Mark Pharand, Manager of Security Services

UPEI's building emergency plans have been revised and expanded. This session will review the plan and what you should do if you find yourself in a campus building during an emergency. Come and find out what the new Assembly Point signs popping up on campus are all about and get any questions you may have about campus emergencies answered.

New Employee Coffee Break with Health, Safety & Environment 
10:30–11:00 am, AH 142

The Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Department is launching monthly New Employee Coffee Breaks. All employees hired in the past year are invited to come to this first HSE coffee break to meet the HSE team and learn about what this department is doing to help keep campus safe. Coffee/tea and snacks will be provided.

Employee Health & Safety Education Session 
11:00 am–12:00 pm, AH 142
Presented by Kevin Robinson, Manager of Health & Safety

UPEI launched Health & Safety Education Sessions in May of 2017 to ensure that all workplace parties are educated on Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation. This session will review the OHS Act, roles and responsibilities of employees, and what you can expect from your supervisors. Employees hired since May 2017 or who have not attended a session are encouraged to register and attend this session.

Tai Chi 
12:15–12:45 pm, Quadrangle

Tai Chi involves deep stretching with a full range of motion and continuous turning of the spine. The practice of Tai Chi can have many physical and mental benefits including increased strength and flexibility, calming of the mind, and stress reduction.

Tuesday, September 25

Biosafety Cafe 
10:00–11:00 am, AVC McCain Foundation Learning Commons, AVC 285N

Take your morning coffee break with UPEI’s Biosafety Officer and Biosafety Committee members. Cake and coffee will be provided and there will be opportunities to test your biosafety knowledge and win prizes.

Snacks with Security 
11:00–11:30 am, FSDE Main Entrance (by CUB and Bell Aliant Centre)

Karma Yoga 
12:10–12:55 pm, Chaplaincy Centre

This program provides a full body strength and flexibility workout which tones the body. Long stretches will melt away stress and create a feeling of deep relaxation. Please bring your own mat and/or towel and water. Fee for each class is a donation to the UPEI food bank - $5 or food donation.

When Disaster Strikes the Time to Prepare is Over: Are you ready?

Presented by Cindy MacDougall, Public Safety Officer, PEI Public Safety Emergency Measures Organization

If an emergency happens, it may take emergency workers some time to reach you.  Could you look after yourself and your family for 72 hours?  Emergency may be beyond our control, but we can reduce the risk and impact of them.  Get prepared to face emergencies and get questions answered. 


Wednesday, September 26

Safety Fair
10:00 am–2:00 pm, W.A. Murphy Student Centre

A fair with all things safety related!  This event brings together safety related products, services and organizations to showcase all things safety related with lots of hands on activities and opportunities to win prizes. All members of the campus community are invited to attend, there will be something for everyone. Opportunities to learn to use a fire extinguisher (hands on), practice using an AED, get a personal occupational health check, meet first responders and more.

Fire Extinguisher Training (Drop In) 
10:00 am–2:00 pm, W.A. Murphy Student Centre

The Charlottetown Fire Department will be on site to provide hands on fire extinguisher training to anyone who stops by during this four-hour period. Drop in and get familiar with using an extinguisher properly. Everyone who takes part in this electronic simulated training will be entered into a draw to win a fire extinguisher and smoke detector for their home.

Lift Safe for Back Safety

Lifting, handling or carrying objects at work can result in musculoskeletal injuries including sprains and strains. Learn how to lift safely to protect your back and reduce your risk of injury.

Hazard and Risk Assessment  
1:00–2:00pm, KMB 237
Presented by Elizabeth Pederson, OHS Education Consultant, Workers Compensation Board of PEI

This session will review the components of a Hazard Identification System. The general guidelines, some sample programs and some helpful tips on setting up your own program will be shared. A part of the standard requirements for mitigating risks is to have safe written work procedures. In this session, this process will be reviewed as well as samples of a written work procedure will be reviewed and shared.


All Week

Safety Hunt – Photo Edition!

This scavenger hunt will run from Monday morning to Thursday evening. Participants will be able to gather photos and participate in activities that will earn them ballots towards the grand prize of 4 meals at the Fox & Crow Campus Pub. The list of safety related locations, people, items, and tasks will be posted Monday morning. Participate on your own or form a team to increase your chance of winning. One ballot earned per item on the list submitted. Collect one or collect them all - it is up to you. Refer to the Safety Week Scavenger Hunt page for full details, contest rules and prizes.

Get Caught Working Safely

Throughout the week, the Health, Safety and Environment Department will partner with senior members of UPEI and UPEISU administration to visit different buildings and areas all across campus to catch people working safely. Get caught working safely and win a prize.
