"The Economics program at UPEI is incredibly broad and interdisciplinary."
What brought you to UPEI? Why did you choose to study here?
I am from Accra, Ghana and UPEI was recommended by one of my high school teachers, who spoke highly of the university. Several students from my high school had already chosen UPEI and were thriving in their programs, which encouraged me to look a little deeper. As I researched, what stood out most was UPEI's co-operative education program. The idea of gaining hands‑on experience while still pursuing my academic interests really resonated with me. I have always valued learning that connects to the real world; learning that shapes you for future work and gives you room to grow professionally and personally.

What do you find unique and interesting about the Economics program?
My interest in economics started when I was young. I remember sitting with my parents, watching news stories about economic challenges, and wondering how I could help make things better. By high school, that curiosity had grown into a genuine passion, and I knew I wanted to study economics more deeply. The Economics program at UPEI is incredibly broad and interdisciplinary. It connects so naturally with other fields and helps you understand how everything in society is linked. What I find most fascinating is how the program shows that our everyday choices, big and small, feed into the larger economy. Economics stands out as a discipline because it sits at the intersection of human behaviour, decision-making, mathematics, policy, and real-world outcomes. Few subjects combine so many perspectives so seamlessly. The smaller class sizes make a huge difference, too. They give us space to ask questions, connect with classmates, and really engage with the material.
What kinds of support have you received during your time here from UPEI students, staff, and UPEI faculty members?
I have been fortunate to receive support from many areas of campus. In my first year, the International Student Office played a key role in helping me adjust to life far from home. Their guidance made the transition smoother. Living in residence also gave me the chance to build meaningful connections with students from different backgrounds. My professors have been incredibly supportive, whether through flexible deadlines, clear course guidance, or simply being willing to help when I needed it. Career Services helped me sharpen my résumé and prepare for opportunities, which has been helpful for my co-op journey.

What opportunities have you experienced because you're studying at UPEI, or because of the Island location?
Being at UPEI has opened doors I never imagined. Through the co‑operative education program, I have gained real workplace exposure, developed professionally, and built confidence in navigating future career paths. My campus involvement has also shaped me in many ways. Through ENACTUS (entrepreneurship student group) where I serve as a project manager, I've had the chance to attend competitions, meet inspiring leaders, and gain hands‑on experience designing and presenting business models. I've also been part of the Lighthouse Campus Ministry, which has supported my personal growth and helped me build a strong community of faith and friendship on campus. UPEI has also supported me through several scholarships, including academic excellence awards, which have strengthened both my motivation and my academic journey. Because PEI is such a close‑knit community, it is easy to connect with professionals, attend conferences, and get involved in volunteer work.

What's unique about UPEI and Prince Edward Island, in your experience?
The Island's tight-knit community has helped me build deep, meaningful relationships, including through my local church, which has become like a second family. Despite the distance from home, building a strong sense of belonging here has made all the difference in my journey. Here, opportunities don't feel distant or out of reach; you hear about them quickly and are encouraged to get involved. PEI makes it easy to volunteer, learn, contribute, and grow. The smallness of the Island is its strength: people know you, support you, and genuinely want to see you succeed.
What would you tell a student considering UPEI and the Economics and Co-op Education program?
I would encourage any student considering UPEI and the Economics program to go for it. Economics opens your eyes to how the world economy works and gives you principles you can apply across so many fields. Adding the co‑op program makes the experience even better, giving you practical exposure, the chance to explore your interests, build professional connections, and gain confidence long before you graduate.
How do you feel UPEI has prepared you for your future?
UPEI has prepared me both intellectually and practically for my future. I have gained a strong blend of academic knowledge, hands‑on experience, and meaningful connections that have shaped my growth and equipped me for the opportunities ahead.
