| Background: | M.E. (Mickey) Cannon was a role model to her children, grandchildren, friends, colleagues and the many students she impacted during her teaching career. Born on New Year's Day in 1928, Mickey (nee MacLeod) grew up in Charlottetown with two older brothers. She attended Prince Street School, graduating in 1943 with the Governor General's Medal as the top academic student. From 1943-47, she was enrolled at Prince of Wales College and was active in the Student Council and in many sports. She studied entomology at Macdonald College at McGill University, graduating in 1949 with a BSc in Agriculture, one of the few women studying science at that time. Upon graduation, Mickey worked as an Assistant Entomologist at the Charlottetown Research Station, Agriculture Canada, until 1953 when she married Fred Cannon. While raising four children, Mickey completed her Bachelor of Education at St. Dunstan's University (UPEI) through part-time studies, graduating in 1969. She then embarked on her teaching career at Charlottetown Rural High School, mainly teaching geometry and chemistry. Mickey's sense of humour, care for her students (inside and outside of the classroom), and ability to excite them about science and math, endeared her to generations of students. Mickey retired in 1990 and enjoyed her remaining years with her family and friends. Living a long and happy life, Mickey passed away in Charlottetown in May 2022 at the age of 94. |
