Description: Granted annually to one student with superior academic achievement entering their third year of undergraduate study majoring in Accounting, English or Sustainable Design Engineering at the University of Prince Edward Island. The recipient will be selected on the basis of academic standing. Preference will be given to graduates of Souris/Kings County high schools who have been members of Canadian Paralympic, Olympic, Canada Games or provincial sports teams or have a history of volunteer efforts with Prince Edward Island libraries/organizations to encourage youth interest in Science, Technology, the Arts or Reading.
Background: Robert Easton CPA, CMA generously established this scholarship in 2019 to support students at the University of Prince Edward Island. A former public servant and wheelchair track athlete, he competed for Canada from the mid 1970's until his retirement from competition following the 1988 Seoul Paralympics. Recognition for Robert Easton's contribution and athletic achievements includes induction to the Canadian Paralympic Hall of Fame (2013) and Alberta Sports Hall of Fame (2000). In 1992, he established the Easton Family Scholarship at the University of Alberta to endow an annual scholarship. Robert Easton feels the determination; discipline and skills gained from youth involvement in sport and interest in reading, science and the arts impacts one's goals, education options and future career choices. The UPEI scholarship reflects his interests, Island connections and is part of a quiet effort to "give-back" to communities.
