Astronomy Public Viewing

Come see some of the marvels of the night sky through our 8-inch telescope at the UPEI observatory. Potential viewing objects include the Moon, planets, nebulae, and galaxies. Volunteers from the Charlottetown Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) and the UPEI Physics Department will be on hand to show you the sights and answer your astronomical questions. Our next viewing is scheduled from 9:15 pm to 10:45 pm on Saturday, May 10, 2014. Guests are asked to come to Memorial Hall Room 417. This event is weather dependent. In the event of cloudy skies requiring a cancellation, the viewing may be shifted to Sunday, May 11 at the same time (if weather permits). This event is free of charge and open to all members of the public. It is necessary to climb the stairs from the 4th floor up to the observatory, but an elevator can be taken up to the 4th floor.

AVC Class of 2014 White Coat Ceremony and Awards Night

AVC's White Coat Ceremony provides AVC veterinary students with the opportunity to celebrate their many successes and passage from the rank of students to Doctors of Veterinary Medicine. White Coat is a jubilant celebration where students are cloaked in a white coat, presented by family members or close friends. Many awards are presented ranging from class spirit and leadership awards, to recognition for academic performance and skill competencies. Following the White Coat presentations, the graduating class recites the Veterinary Oath with the Dean of Veterinary Medicine. This year's Ceremony will take place at the Homburg Theatre in Confederation Centre of the Arts from 4-6 pm.

PEI/Atlantic Book Awards -- Non-fiction Panel

As part of the Festival preceding the combined gala for the PEI Book Awards and the Atlantic Book Awards May 21, there will be a panel discussion by non-fiction nominees John Flood – editor (The Master’s Wife: The Book and the Place), Earle Lockerby (Diaries of the Acadian Deportations, No. 1: Jeremiah Bancroft at Fort Beauséjour and Grand-Pré) and Pan Wendt (Lionel F. Celebration of Island Studies

The Office of the Vice-President Academic invites you to a "Celebration of Island Studies" on Wednesday, May 21, from 3:00-4:30 pm in the Faculty Lounge, Main Building. Join us at an informal reception to celebrate Island Studies at the University of Prince Edward Island that will pay tribute to the work of the Institute of Island Studies and recognize the contributions of its past Director, Irene Novaczek.

R.G. Thomson Lecture

The R.G. Thomson Lecture is an endowed annual lecture that honours AVC's founding dean. The lecture will be presented by Dr. Jonna Mazet, University of California, Davis. Dr. Mazet's lecture, "Rising to the Research Challenge: new approaches for identifying emerging infectious diseases and mitigating their spread," will be held on Thursday, May 15 at 9:20 a.m. in Lecture Theatre A.

AVC Graduate Studies and Research Days

In celebration of the graduate studies program, will be held on Thursday and Friday, May 15 and 16, 2014, in AVC's Lecture Theatre A. Students will present their recent research findings (or their research plans if they are new students) in animal health research, fish health and marine research and biomedical science and human health research. An awards ceremony will follow.

The Prince Edward Island Premier Who Rocked the Cradle Book Launch

Join H. Wade MacLauchlan and Alex B. Campbell for the Charlottetown Launch of Alex B.
