As part of the Senior Management Team and reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Director of Academic Affairs will be responsible for managing the office of the Dean, as well as faculty affairs, including directing the human resources planning, recruitment, and development for academic staff in the Faculty of Medicine; and supporting and providing strategic advice to the Dean, COO, and Faculty of Medicine.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Managing the office of the Dean, as well as faculty affairs, including directing the human resources planning, recruitment, and development for academic staff in the Faculty of Medicine
  • Providing leadership to support the programs of academic affairs including Dean’s office, the undergraduate medical education programs, postgraduate medical education programs, admissions, learner wellbeing and success, policy and governance
  • Supporting and providing strategic advice to the COO and Dean, Faculty of Medicine. Duties include coordinating, overseeing, and advising on administrative academic operations involving faculty affairs relating to the Office of the Dean
  • Managing recruitment and retention activities for clinical and other faculty positions, which involves recommending recruitment and retention strategies for academic employees
  • Researching best practices
  • Ensuring employment equity guidelines are followed
  • Resolving immigration issues
  • Coordinating onboarding and orienting new faculty; overseeing the appointments, promotion, and tenure process in consultation with the COO and Dean
  • Policy and procedures development and implementation
  • Faculty recognition; faculty equity and wellness; overseeing faculty initiatives related to strategic initiatives such as mentorship and wellness
  • Reviewing, analyzing, and providing strategic advice to the COO and Dean regarding policy and collective agreement implications and problem resolution
  • Collaborating with Faculty Relations and General Counsel with regard to grievances and other legal matters
  • Managing the operations and staff in the Dean's office
  • Supporting the Dean and COO to build and foster relationships with senior internal and external officials and groups including Government of Prince Edward Island as well as faculty and administrative staff in neighboring provinces
  • Representing the Faculty of Medicine with internal and external parties
  • Overseeing the budget of the Dean’s office and will be involved in budget meetings with the senior management team
  • Participating in the long-term and strategic planning for academic affairs
  • Preparing annual activity reports for senior administration
  • Working with academic administration on institutional accreditation as required
  • Performing other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of a Graduate Degree in business, health administration or related field; and/or an equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Experience (7-10 years) in a progressive leadership position in an academic environment or related field including considerable supervisory experience
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills as well as proficiency in the use of computer hardware and software are required
  • Excellent analytical thinking; planning and organizational abilities; strong leadership and strategic thinking would be essential to the role
  • Experience working with the UPEI Faculty Association Collective Agreement, Labour Standards and Human Rights
  • Experience within a post-secondary institution would be considered an asset
  • Experience working with a regional health authority would be considered an asset
