Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Manager of the medical laboratory will support the mission of the Faculty of Medicine by leading and managing the operations of the medical laboratory to provide academic and technical support in a teaching environment that supports and practices safety while assisting clinical faculty and healthcare educators to meet or exceed curriculum objectives. A significant component of the teaching and research programs within the Faculty of Medicine involve laboratory space including anatomy labs and both wet and dry lab research space. Strong leadership overseeing the technical and administrative operations of the Faculty of Medicine’s substantial laboratory infrastructure is crucial to the sustainability and growth of the teaching and research programs.

The Manager of the medical laboratory will assist in the creation of an education experience which excels in fostering realistic, innovative, and collaborative practice, and will serve as the key administrator, overseeing all day-to-day operations of the medical laboratories; provide leadership for lab staff, budget, and promotion of anatomy programs throughout the Faculty of Medicine.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Managing the day-to-day activities, operations and maintenance of the anatomy and multidisciplinary laboratory programs
  • Managing staff within the various laboratories and ensuring high standards of quality within the laboratories, including ensuring staff have necessary up-to-date safety training
  • Administering the Anatomical Gift program including consulting with families and health care providers to decide whether to accept or reject cadavers
  • Developing and implementing shared services and equipment agreements, policies and procedures for the medical laboratory
  • Serving on all user and education committees representing the medical laboratory operations
  • Recruiting, arranging training, managing, and evaluating operations and support staff
  • Participating in the long-term and strategic planning for the medical laboratory
  • Assisting with the design and operation of shares and dedicated laboratories
  • Coordinating certification and recertification of labs and/or equipment with agencies
  • Identifying, developing, and implementing laboratory policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), including ensuring the safe handling of hazardous biological and chemical agents and radioactive materials
  • Preparing annual activity reports for senior administration
  • Reviewing operating procedures
  • Overseeing all equipment and consumables and ensuring adequate levels of same
  • Developing laboratory budgetary requirements and overseeing the purchase of equipment for the laboratories
  • Developing contracts between the various laboratories and client users
  • Ensuring education and training records are accurate and available for evaluations and accreditation
  • Working with academic administration on institutional accreditation as required
  • Negotiating and maintaining equipment warranties and maintenance contracts
  • Performing other related duties as required

This position is expected to be on-call due to the nature of the Anatomical Gift program

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of an Undergraduate Degree in a related field such as Science, business, or health administration; and/or an equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Experience (5-7 years) in a medical or related laboratory including considerable supervisory experience
  • Coursework towards a Master’s Degree in a related field would be considered an asset
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills as well as proficiency in the use of computer hardware and software are required
  • Experience within a post-secondary institution would be considered an asset
