The Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) seeks to fill the position of Director of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) for a five-year renewable contract. This is a senior management position in the College and as such reports directly to the Dean.

The AVC is a fully accredited veterinary school by the Canadian and American Veterinary Medical Associations (CVMA/AVMA), is recognized by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, and delivers DVM, MVSc, MSc and PhD programs. There are ~85 full-time faculty, ~250 dedicated staff (including full- and part-time) and ~55 graduate students.

The VTH at AVC includes multi-disciplinary Large and Small Animal Hospitals, as well as food animal and equine ambulatory services (having 19 services in total). The VTH is an important local and regional service provider to veterinarians and the public. Operating as both a primary care and referral veterinary practice, the VTH provides a key clinical training environment for ~ 275 veterinary students and ~25 interns and residents.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Working with managers of the VTH Administration, the Hospital Director has primary responsibility for leadership on all VTH matters related to finance and budgets, reporting, project management, human resource management, clinical care and governance, hospital operations, communications and workplace health and safety. Specific responsibilities include:
 

  • Working with UPEI, AVC and VTH financial staff to ensure financial sustainability of the VTH through appropriate budgeting and financial management
  • Working with the Dean's Office, Dean’s Council and VTH Administration to determine and fulfill the vision, strategy, and operational objectives of the VTH, in alignment with the mission of the AVC
  • Ensuring the hospital environment successfully delivers the balanced requirements for clinical patient care, clinical research, and clinical education and experience for rotational veterinary medical students, interns, and residents
  • Working with VTH Administration and hospital staff to support inventory management and budgeting, including procurement of supplies, equipment, consumables and medications in the Materials Management Unit and Dispensary, as required for hospital operations
  •  Ensuring that the VTH meets the AVMA/CVMA accreditation standards of operation and those of the PEIVMA
  • Working with the Dean’s Office and VTH Administration to support relationship management, promotion, and communication of VTH services to referring veterinarians, clients, and the community
  • Working with VTH Administration to support, supervise, and performance manage VTH staff and FA2 Faculty within the VTH, in conjunction with UPEI Human Resources and in accordance with applicable collective bargaining agreements
  • Ensuring appropriate plans and processes for training, onboarding, professional development and the wellbeing of VTH staff are developed and implemented, in support of successful recruitment and retention
  • Working with VTH Administration to foster an environment supportive of the wellbeing of VTH faculty, staff and students, and a quality learning environment
  • As a senior member of the VTH Administration team, this position provides leadership direction and expertise through long-term strategy planning and implementation, to promote and enhance fiscal, operational and administrative management, monitoring and reporting, including development of policies, systems, and processes
  • This position is considered a contract administration position and not a faculty association position; therefore, it does not have teaching and service responsibilities, except in exceptional circumstances (e.g. high-level veterinary duties such as narcotics documentation)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must hold or be eligible for general licensure by the PEIVMA
  • Must have at least 5-7 years of full-time work experience in the veterinary industry
  • Must have experience as a clinical veterinarian in companion animals, large animals and/or field services
  • Must have at least 3 years of experience in management, including supervision, management and mentoring of staff
  • Must have experience leading a multi-faceted unit with responsibilities including financial oversight and budgeting
  • Must possess well-developed skills of collaboration, communication, collegiality and relationship building
  • Leadership success within an academic setting, a healthcare environment and/or a unionized workplace would be assets, as would an advanced degree related to management, such as an MBA
