The Department of Student Affairs at UPEI is seeking a Senior Student to fill the Student Assistant - Learning and Exam position.  This candidate will work directly with Accessibility Services in coordinating and facilitating front office duties, learning supports and facilitating the department’s exam invigilation requirements for students with disabilities. This person will report to the Manager of Accessibility Services and will be an essential part of the Student Affairs team.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Student Assistant - Learning and Exam will:

  • Provide one-on-one student support discussing strategies and techniques to enable students with disabilities to capitalize on their strengths and remove barriers to learning
  • Assist Learning Strategists in the development of individualized learning strategy plans for students with disabilities
  • Assist students in understanding their learning needs
  • Collaborate with students to find tools & strategies that they are willing to use 
  • Assist with providing support in the form of academic coaching, technology training, study skills (individual and group work)
  • Assist with the administration of UPEI and AVC internal exams for students registered with Accessibility Services 
  • Provide and operate accommodations needed for any exam, including but not limited to scribing and text-to-speech software
  • Ensure the academic integrity of all exams
  • Support the Accessibility Support Facilitator with needs related to the exam booking software
  • Provide front desk support as needed, such as answering calls and emails, booking appointments, checking students in, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The candidate will:

  • Be a 4th-year student with plans to pursue a career in Education, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field
  • Experience working in a student staff position in Accessibility Services is an asset
  • Have experience working with and/or supporting students with disabilities
  • Understand accommodations and inclusive practices 
  • Experience with Kurzweil, Access Deck, audio note-taking software, and PC systems 
  • Exhibit dependability and honesty
  • Have excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Experience assisting Accessibility staff with the administration and coordination of exams is an asset
  • Have excellent oral and written skills
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrate the ability to work on a team
  • Experience mentoring or tutoring students and helping them develop learning strategies is an asset 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of tools and resources to help students overcome executive functioning deficits

Priority will be given to University of Prince Edward Island students in accordance with Recruitment, Selection, Hiring and Employment Policies and the Procedures manual.
