The AVC Diagnostic Services (AVC DS) is seeking applications from qualified candidates to fill a Senior Molecular Diagnostic Microbiology Technologist position at the Regional Diagnostic Virology Services (RDVS). The individual will work as part of a team in RDVS and AVC DS in the establishment and implementation of a COVID 19 wastewater laboratory testing hub in Atlantic Canada.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties:

  • Participate in the development, establishment, and implementation of COVID 19 wastewater laboratory testing service hub in Atlantic Canada
  • Work with the Diagnostic Virologist, the Director of AVC DS, management and technical staff of the RDVS and AVC DS, and the biosafety department of UPEI in the overall implementation of COVID 19 wastewater laboratory testing services in Atlantic Canada
  • Work with appropriate AVC DS and UPEI staff in Biosafety Level 2 Plus certification and ISO 17025 certification of the laboratory facility
  • Collaborate with National Microbiology Laboratory, Public Health Agency Canada with regards to standard operating procedures and requirements in the performance, validation and confirmation of the tests, release of results and posting results in the PHAC dashboard
  • Receive wastewater samples and enter associated metadata of sample information in the Laboratory Management System of AVC DS and work with electronic delivery of results to PHAC National Microbiology Laboratory using Laboratory Management System of AVC DS and UPEI computer system
  • Engage with stakeholders submitting wastewater for testing and coordinate the receipt of wastewater samples to the laboratory
  • Archiving of wastewater samples and nucleic acid extracts and maintaining inventory of archived samples

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • The individual must have a postgraduate degree in Microbiology and related discipline
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working in the discipline of microbiology and molecular diagnostics
  • Experience in designing and setting up new laboratories.
  • Extensive experience in diagnostic test technology development for infectious agents including optimization, validation, interpretation and putting together a state-of-the-art diagnostic assay
  • Extensive hands-on experience in performing and troubleshooting molecular diagnostic technologies such as multiplex assays, real time PCR, conventional PCR, sequencing etc.
  • Extensive experience on molecular biology software tools including primer design, alignment, blasting, cloning, metagenomics, microarrays, qPCR, etc.
  • Experience in other traditional diagnostic testing for infectious agents such as cell culture, virus isolation, ELISA etc.
  • Experience in preparing diagnostic samples including required documents for shipment to outside laboratories
  • Extensive knowledge of wastewater testing protocols for infectious agents, wastewater laboratory design and experience in running an autoclave
  • Verbal and written ability to communicate professionally and competently
  • Experience in designing a framework for an on-line data base system
  • Must be capable of designing and conducting projects, requesting quotations from vendors, and participating in account tracking for laboratory reagents and supplies
  • Experience in conducting and overseeing multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
  • Excellent organizational skills, and ability to collaborate with AVC DS , UPEI and PHAC personnel
  • Ability to present in meetings and scientific forums
