Term:

This competition will be used to staff the Spring Explore program and Summer EAL customized high school program offerings.  The term is from May 24 to June 30 (Explore) and July 31 to August 25 (summer high school groups).  There is potential for other EAL customized teaching with other international high school groups in April, May, and June.

The UPEI English Language Centre will be offering a number of English as an Additional Language programs over the Spring and Summer of 2023. This includes both the Explore Program for Canadian and International students ages 19+ and several short-term high school programs for visiting international groups.  Participants in EAL Customized programs have formal EAL lessons weekday mornings and organized socio-cultural activities during weekday afternoons, and weekends.  EAL Instructors are responsible for the planning and delivery of daily EAL lessons, each week. The English Language Centre (ELC) will be hiring up to three EAL instructors on a casual basis.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instructors report directly to the Explore Program Manager and/or the Manager of Customized EAL Programs. They are responsible for:

  • EAL instruction – planning and delivery of daily lessons
  • Collaborative course design and planning, based on pre-determined weekly themes and ELC guidelines       
  • Student assessment during the program and summative evaluations of student achievement
  • Participation in weekly staff meetings
  • Creating a positive learning environment
  • Upholding the policies of and regulations of the UPEI English Language Centre
  • Other duties as assigned by the above managers

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.Ed. or other degree with equivalent work experience
  • EAL teaching experience  
  • Excellent oral and written proficiency in English
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience working in cross-cultural settings
  • Current criminal record check including working with the vulnerable sector 

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • EAL teaching certificate / Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language
  • Previous experience with UPEI Explore or EAL Customized Programs is an asset
