MTS Level 3 - Barn Assistant - Large Animal (Two (2) Positions) - Veterinary Teaching Hospital -Atlantic Veterinary College
$48,938 to $53,655 per annum, as per CUPE 1870
ASAP to April 30, 2026 (Term may be reduced or extended depending on performance, available funding and departmental requirements)
The Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the Atlantic Veterinary College requires Kennel Assistants to play an important role in the Large Animal Hospital (LAH) team supporting Animal Care Attendants, Technical and Clinical staff with responsibilities including cleaning, basic animal husbandry and restocking various hospital areas. These positions will participate in an overnight schedule supporting after-hours care and basic functions in the LAH.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Basic cleaning, waste disposal and disinfection of equipment and large animal holding areas, following infection control guidelines
• Assist with the restocking of laundry, feed, bedding and consumables.
• Preparation of stalls for patients
• Provide feeding and follow feeding instructions
• Provide assistance with the safe handling and restraint of large animal patients
• Provide assistance to LA Animal Care Attendants (ACAs), Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs) and Clinicians for routine and emergent examinations, diagnostic procedures and treatments
• Assist with the daily care and husbandry of hospitalized large animal patients within a specialty hospital setting
• Work as required with equipment and maintain high standards of cleanliness
• Liaise with ACAs, RVTs, Clinicians and clients, where required.
• Maintain the highest standards of professionalism in all interactions and communication including respecting patient/client confidentiality
QUALIFICATIONS:
• A graduate of Grade XII, or an equivalent combination of training and veterinary/animal experience
• 6 months’ experience in the safe handling and care of large animals, with experience in a clinical setting considered an asset
• Certification in low-stress animal handling would be considered an asset
• Must have basic competency to input data in computer systems and spreadsheets
• Must have ability to lift weights up to 25kg
• Must be self-motivated with a strong work ethic and reliable
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
• Must be able to work independently, but also as part of a team
• Must be able to work nightshifts and be prepared to work some weekends, some statutory holidays and UPEI closures
