The University of Prince Edward Island invites applications to fill an advisor position to support UPEI Indigenous students. Reporting to the Director and working with other members of the Webster Centre team, the Coordinator of the Mawi’omi Indigenous Student Centre will be responsible for the effective delivery of programs and services to support Indigenous students, with a primary focus on access and success.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Advise Indigenous students through the student life cycle from recruitment through graduation, providing cultural, personal and academic support
  • Collaborate with and support the Elder(s) in Residence
  • Coordinate Mawi’omi Centre resources and activities to promote a sense of community and belonging for Indigenous students while raising awareness of Indigenous cultures, traditions and history at UPEI
  • Design and deliver group programming and outreach activities, both online and in person
  • Work in conjunction with the academic support team and recruitment team in working with high school counsellors and appropriate community resources that aim to support Indigenous students with post-secondary enrolment
  • Work with faculty and staff on student engagement and retention initiatives for Indigenous students
  • Participate in the campus community to promote and encourage the active inclusion of Indigenous pedagogies in a broad range of university activities and strategies

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post-secondary education and experience is required though a Bachelor’s degree is preferred, along with three years’ experience working with people, ideally in a post-secondary environment
  • Familiarity working within Indigenous communities is essential
  • A Master’s degree and/or experience working with a diverse student population reflecting the reality of today’s campus, including issues of culture, gender, orientation, and equity would be considered assets
  • Experience in leadership roles is essential and experience working on provincial and regional committees would be considered an asset
  • We seek an individual who has well developed listening, observational, and interview skills with the flexibility to respond to the changing demands of a dynamic environment
  • Must demonstrate an ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Previous experience in building community is essential. Having knowledge and experience addressing the challenges of student engagement and in particular, those of the first-year experience, is an asset
