The Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering (FSDE) at UPEI, located at 550 University Ave in Charlottetown, PEI, is a unique engineering education program.  The Faculty is heavily linked to industry through an Advisory Council, the Design Clinic program, student work placements and research partnerships.

The Faculty is currently seeking a well-rounded individual for the position of Business Development Engineer (BDE).  Working under the direction of the Director of Industry Partnerships, the prime responsibility of the BDE is to establish and manage relationships with community and industrial clients and identify/scope projects to support the undergraduate student Design Clinic program

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Promote and explain the services of the Faculty to community and industrial clients in a broad range of geographical and business sectors
  • Develop and manage long-term relationships with community clients, companies, funding agencies and other key stakeholders
  • Exercise sound judgment and provide direction on how and when to engage potential clients, FSDE faculty and staff, in order to identify and scope potential Design Clinic projects and ensure their compatibility with the capabilities and focus areas of the program
  • Prepare Design Clinic project proposals and present these to Design Clinic instructors for review and selection - to be completed on an annual basis, aligning with the academic year
  • Prepare client agreements, including project budgets, in consultation with legal staff and other key stakeholders
  • Ensure that clients and UPEI stakeholders have a clear understanding of contractual commitments, including intellectual property arrangements, confidentiality terms, timescales, deliverables and payment terms
  • Work closely with and act as a liaison between clients and Design Clinic instructors at all stages of Design Clinic projects to ensure projects are completed according to the needs of the clients and of the Program
  • Manage the end-to-end process for initiating, scoping and delivering service contracts, including coordinating with the FSDE Manager of Operations to prepare quotes and to ensure staff availability and timely completion of projects; legal staff to review draft agreements; and the FSDE Finance and Planning Officer for client invoicing
  • Introduce clients interested in long-term research collaborations to faculty members with compatible research interests when appropriate
  • Manage the process, in collaboration with Synapse, for negotiating and signing memoranda of understanding, non-disclosure and client agreements, in order to facilitate intellectual property development and commercialization opportunities
  • Take into consideration the technical and financial resources of the Faculty during the project definition and contract negotiations
  • Prepare budget forecasts for the FSDE Finance and Planning Officer on clinic revenues and anticipated operating costs such as supplies, equipment and travel
  • Serve as account manager and quality assurance check for Design Clinic projects including post-delivery follow-up
  • Provide the Director of Industry Partnerships with Design Clinic project status updates

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree in Engineering
  • Must be eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in the Province of Prince Edward Island
  • A minimum of 5 years’ industry experience that is closely aligned with one or more of the Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering's strategic focus areas, i.e., mechatronics, sustainable energy, bioresources, biomedical engineering, advanced manufacturing
  • Experience with external business development activities
  • Experience in process line layout, performance and related automation technologies
  • Experience in crafting and negotiating agreements and contracts
  • Experience in preparing budgets
  • Strong analytical, documentation and presentation skills
  • Strong verbal and written English
  • Strong computer skills (MS Office, G Suite tools, virtual meeting tools)
  • Experience using a client relationship management (CRM) system
  • Ability to work independently and under time pressure
  • Team oriented
  • Willingness to travel whenever needed
