The Vice President Academic and Research at the University of Prince Edward Island invites applications for the position of Director of Academic Operations.

The Director of Academic Operations is charged with managing and executing a wide range of administrative, operational and executive support activities for the Vice President Academic & Research.  As the principal aide to the Vice President, this includes coordination and oversight of issues involving all academic and research activities in the university at large.  The incumbent works concurrently in multiple areas of responsibility, initiatives and issues while assisting the Vice President with identifying and meeting often unforeseen requests and deadlines. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Manage strategic relationships between the Office and internal and external constituents, including the overall review, consultations and decision making process
• Prioritize and allocation time for key strategic priorities and key constituencies as well as delegation and assignment of responsibilities for issues as required
• Manage, track and assess progress of program goals and priorities, initiatives and activities, ensuring that appropriate action is taken to ensure appropriate outcomes
• Highlight important issues and areas of concern for the Vice President’s consideration and decision, ensuring thorough analysis and presentation of facts are provided and the various perspectives are presented accurately and objectively
• Develop ideas and action plans, establish goals, policies and practices, to promote and drive change
• Works closely and collaboratively with Academic leaders and other senior officers of the University, and government officials on a wide range of strategic, policy and programmatic areas
• In consultation with appropriate executive and senior staff, resolve complex problems and issues concerning stakeholders and day-to-day business operational matters
• Drafting  all substantive communications, briefings, major addresses, remarks and presentations for the Vice President
• Develop, direct and/or co-ordinate the preparation of special reports and documents for the Vice President, including multi-year plans,  goals and objectives, status reports and action plans
• Responsible for the daily leadership and direction of all aspects of the Office of the Vice President.  Directs and oversees the administration of policies, procedures and initiatives
• Coordinate preparation of and drafts action and information items for various committees such as annual tenure and promotion, sabbatical, academic hires and academic re-organizations
• Coordinate and organize various academic meetings such as APCC, Dean’s Council as well as other meetings and events as required
• Develop and support the Vice President’s budget process and investigates inconsistencies or anomalies and recommends actions to the Vice President

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.  A Master’s degree would be considered an asset
• A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in a related position in a university, governmental or other public institution
• Demonstrated leadership, judgment, analysis and decision-making skills in dealing with highly sensitive and confidential matters
• Demonstrated organizational, analytical and problem-solving abilities with superior attention to detail
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and report-writing are necessary
• Ability to determine priorities, respond effectively to changes and meet deadlines
• Demonstrated communication, customer service, interpersonal and organizational skills with ability to exercise tact and discretion
• Proven ability to scope, plan and execute project-based initiatives including research and analysis
• Strong leadership skills with emphasis on decision-making, problem solving and the ability to foster a motivating and respectful environment
