Do you want to join a dynamic team practicing and teaching the highest standards of Veterinary Medicine?  Do you want to support veterinary technicians and clinicians across a large animal caseload?  Do you want to be part of training and shaping the next generation of veterinarians?  If so, we’d love to have you join us!  The Veterinary Teaching Hospital is seeking applicants to fill a Large Animal Care Attendant position in the AVC’s Large Animal Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Clean and disinfect equipment and large animal housing and holding areas to the highest standard meeting infection control guidelines
  • Food preparation: provide feeding and follow feeding instructions for large animal patients
  • Assist with the husbandry, safe handling, and restraint of all large animal patients for movement, examination, diagnostic testing, treatments for large animal hospital and field services, including stallions, bulls, and untrained large animals
  • Provide assistance to veterinary technicians and clinicians for routine and emergent examinations, diagnostic procedures, and treatments for large animal patients
  • Assist with the daily care and husbandry of hospitalized patients within a specialty hospital setting
  • Safe use of equipment as required in the daily operations of the large animal hospital and large animal field services, including use of truck/trailer, tractor, fork-lift, and cleaning equipment
  • Assist with monitoring feed storage, consumables stocks in the large animal hospital
  • Communicate with clients to support efficient and safe loading and unloading of large animal patients on arrival/discharge from the large animal hospital or in the field
  • Maintain the highest standards of professionalism in all client interactions and communication including respecting patient/client confidentiality
  • Includes working some weekends, some statutory holidays and UPEI closures

General duties:

  • Must be willing to participate in a rotating schedule that will include evening/weekend/holiday work
  • Must be willing to be assigned in an on-call schedule that may be required for hospital operations
  • Participating in the training of veterinary students, technician students and post-graduate program veterinarians with confidence and support
  • Maintaining collegial and professional interactions and communication with colleagues, students, and clients at all times
  • Maintaining safe, respectful, professional, and ethical conduct, handling, and interactions with patients and during patient care as befitting a veterinary teaching hospital environment and in accordance with veterinary regulatory bodies

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A graduate of Grade 12
  • One and a half years’ experience in the safe handling and restraint of large animals required, with experience in a clinical setting preferred
  • Certification in low-stress large animal handling preferred
  • Must have demonstrated abilities in use of equipment and vehicles required for large animal hospital operations
  • Must have ability to lift weights up to 25kg
  • Must be self-motivated and reliable
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to work independently, but also as part of a team
  • Must be prepared to work some weekends, some statutory holidays and UPEI closures
