The University of Prince Edward Island invites applications for a position of Health, Safety, and Environment Officer. Under the general direction of the Vice President Administration and Finance, and general supervision of the Manager of Health, Safety and Environment, this position is responsible for supporting the UPEI Health, Safety, and Environment Management System.

Provide support to the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Department and ensure working practices are safe and comply with OHS legislation and UPEI policies and regulations to promote a safe work culture. Assist with maintaining hazardous chemical inventory, storage and purchasing, inspecting Containment Level 1 (CL1) laboratories as part of the CL1 Compliance Program and assisting with Containment Level 2 (CL2) laboratory compliance. Assist in various HSE programs and initiatives as part of the Occupational HSE Management System.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct regular campus wide site visits, identify areas of risk, and consider how risks could be reduced, advise on a range of specialist areas: e.g., fire regulations, hazardous substances, noise, safeguarding machinery and occupational hazards
  • Monitor and organize the safe storage and disposal of hazardous chemical substances, monitor chemical purchasing and chemical inventory, ensure campus wide Global Harmonized System – WHMIS 2015 compliance
  • Oversee and maintain campus First Aid kits
  • Monitor the CL1 Laboratory Compliance Program, assist with CL2 Laboratory compliance
  • Assist in organizing HSE programs: e.g., Hearing Protection, Respiratory Protection Fit Testing, Transport of Dangerous Goods, and Biosafety Training
  • Assist with incident investigation data collection, analysis, and reports
  • Keep up to date with new OHS legislation and maintain a working knowledge of all UPEI policies, procedures, and regulations 
  • Attend the Institutional Biosafety Committee meetings as required as a hazardous chemical advisor
  • Other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

The preferred candidate will possess the following:

  • Post-secondary education in science with a focus in chemistry
  • Post-Secondary education in Occupational Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) preferred
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in Health, Safety and Environment or related field
  • Knowledge of the PEI Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, PEI Workers’ Compensation Act and Regulations, and UPEI Health, Safety, and Environment Management System
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) with a demonstrated ability to build strong, positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders with a focus on customer service
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills with the ability to use discretion in dealing with confidential and sensitive issues
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Computer competence and proficiency in MS office applications including computerized data bases, word processing and spreadsheet applications
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Experience working in a laboratory setting is an asset
  • Experience in a unionized environment preferred
  • Experience in an academic environment is an asset
